There are several reasons why your iPod Nano may not turn on or awake out of its "Sleep Mode." This can be extremely irritating if you wish to use your iPod Nano, but the device is constantly malfunctioning. You may not need to take your iPod Nano in to be repaired if the player doesn't turn on as normal. There are a variety of different fixes that you can attempt as a way to get the Nano to turn on.
Flip the iPod Nano's "Hold" switch to "OFF." The iPod Nano cannot be turn on if the switch is set to "ON." Reset the iPod Nano. Move the "Hold" switch to "ON" and then "OFF." Then, press down the "Select" and "Menu" buttons on the Nano. Hold those buttons for about eight seconds. The Apple logo will then become visible on the iPod Nano. Once this occurs, try turning the iPod Nano on once again. Connect the iPod Nano to an iPod charger or a computer that is turned on via the iPod Nano's USB cord. Charge the Nano for at least 30 minutes. Then, try to turn the Nano on. Update the iPod Nano's software. Connect the Nano to your computer via the player's USB cable. Open iTunes, and click the iPod Nano's name on the left part of iTunes. Click the "Summary" option at the top of iTunes. Then, click on the "Check for Updates" button that's positioned in the middle of iTunes. Follow the instructions that appear inside iTunes in order to install the updates on the Nano.
Toggle the Hold switch. To do this, slide the switch toHold (an orange bar appears) and then slide it back (orange bar ishidden).
Reset the iPod by holding down the Menu and Center buttons for 10 seconds.
Ifthe Apple logo appears on the display, connect the iPod to a computerand verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If the iPodappears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting isneeded.
If the Apple logo does not appear or the iPodis not seen in iTunes, connect the iPod to a power source by eitherplugging it into an Apple iPod USB Power Adapter or directly into acomputer's USB port.
Let the iPod charge for at least 20 minutes. Note: If the iPod is connected to a computer, make sure the computer is not set to sleep, standby, or hibernate.
Afterthe iPod has charged for at least 20 minutes and while it is stillconnected to the power source, toggle the Hold switch again as in step1.
Try resetting the iPod by holding down the Menu and Center buttons for 10 seconds.
Ifthe Apple logo appears on the display, connect the iPod to a computerand verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If the iPodappears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting isneeded.
If the Apple logo does not appear or the iPod is not seen in iTunes, the iPod should be serviced.
Try resetting the ipod while its connected to the computer by holding both the menu and center button at the same time for 6-10 seconds until you see an apple appear on the screen. You may need to repeat the reset. If this fails your looking at a hardware issue most likely. Good Luck.
You have to reset your iPod. (Note: This is for the 3rd generation iPod Nano)
To reset iPod nano:
1 Toggle the Hold switch on and off (slide it to HOLD and then back again).
2 Press and hold the Menu and Center buttons for at least 6 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If iPod nano won’t turn on or respond

If you are using a Mac, a message will appear prompting you to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started.
When this stage is completed,
iTunes will present one of two messages on screen with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Restore Instruction 1: Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
Restore Instruction 2: Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display.
It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to
name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.
