Its a firmware problem, im really struggling to find a replacement, but basically the sony optiarc BC-5500A is a discontinued model, and on the sony website, it gives u a firmware download, but its not an up to date one, im having problems installing it, http://www.sony-optiarc.eu/supportservice/downloads/bluraydrivesnotebooks/bc5500a.html
i hope it helps, but i dont kno if u need another version for Windows 7, cus as soon as i put it on i had the same problem as you.

My acer aspire 5920 wont play blu rays anymore the driver is there and says its working but it shows only a cd drive on the devices even though it shows the dvd rom in properties

Best first step is to make sure that you have the most current driver from Acer. If you are unsure if it's current just doenload the one that is right for your operating system.
Either way re-install the drive! (YES, even if it said that everything is operating correctly).

For avatar how fix samsung bd c5500c blu-ray

If this is a Blu Ray Disk then your unit needs a firmware upgrade to be able to play the new Blu ray format. Contact Samsung for the upgrade file, burn to a DVD and run. The update will allow your unit play the new BR Format.

Plays dvd, but not blue ray bdp-1400

You could try and update your player's firmware from Samsung. Here is a link http://www.samsung.com/us/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP01&prd_mdl_cd=&prd_mdl_name=BD-P1400&prd_ia_sub_class_cd=P

You will need to download the firmware file and burn it to a cd-rom using your computer's cd burner then put it into the player. You will need to burn it in raw format and might need a burner program to do it. The player will need firmware upgrades often to be able to play the newer blu-ray movies.

I cannot play Blu Rays on my Acer (Vista) PC with

If the drive doesn't read any disc's you need to reinstall the drivers and verify you have the latest version. If the drive is ONLY having trouble with Blu-ray then i'm assuming it's the player that you're using; it may not have the right Codac's etc. Also, try multiple Blu-ray movies to verify it isn't just the one movie.

My BD-P1500 will not recognise a new non-blu-ray disc.

If its not a Blu-Ray disc, it wont have new technology that the Blu-Ray does not have installed so its unlikely a firmware update wil fix this as its generally for new Blu-Rays.

Does the disc playback in another player?

Is it the correct region code?

Do all other DVD-Video play ok?
