The CBC-1600 comes with a thermal carafe. therefore, it doesn't rely on a heater plate to keep the coffee warm.
Called the company and the representative told me that on the CBC 1600 series, it is intentially designed to turn off the hot plate after brewing because the stainless steel carafe will keep the coffee hot. If you are experiencing poor heating, her suggestion was to preheat the pot with really hot water before putting it under the basket. I can't help wondering if they have turned a bug into a feature
I find the same thing on my unit. The directions are awful. The Making Coffee page does not even indicate that there is a five beep signal to tell you it is done. That is only found in the features and benefits page diagram of the unit. Further, it is unclear to a neophyte like myself that the unit actually includes a permanent filter since it comes with a package of paper ones. Further, it advertises a 1-4 cup mode but the level window for water only begins at 2 cups and no where in the directions does it state how much to add per cup. I could go on but Cuisinart's good marketing image certainly does not apply to this product.
Well, after several months of use, I can attest that the thermal carafe works quite well. I find the coffee is hot for several hours after brewing so I can confirm the plate is supposed to go off. After checking with some coffee aficionados, I was told that keeping it heated via a hot plate burns the coffee over time and damages the flavor!

The problem of the hot plate turning off early appears to be heat related. The "computer" for the DCC 1200 is behind the face panel, and consequently next to the brewing chamber. We found that by removing the grounds immediately after brewing, and then leaving the lid open, the problem went away. You might "stick a fork" in the brewing chamber to keep the lid open a crack after it cools down.
The pot has a great warranty (3 years). They can check your eligibilty by the pot serial number. They send you the new pot for $10 and then you return the old. Their number is 800-726-0190.
I was surprised that the water in my first batch of cycling to rinse the unit was still warm 8 hours later. So I was trying to see how long the warmer operated. Still not sure of what its time should be.
I have made 4 cups of coffee, which was closer to 2 cups with the size of the mugs I have. Seems easy to guess how much water/coffee for 5 or 7 cups, etc.

The coffee pot keeps shutting off, and won't keep the heat plate hot. We repeatedly turn it on and it repeatedly shuts off.
