The hive file is the problem, it is low on honey. Put it back to where the bees can produce enough honey for your PC to recognize it. Compaq's are notorious for their love of honey, that is why it is showing it is missing. DO NOT simply put honey on a CD and insert. Will not work.

My Gateway file c0000218 registry failure the registry cannot load the hive /SystemRoot/System/32/Config/System or its log or alternate is. It is corrupt, absent or, not writable.

it sounds like you have a bad sector on the part of the hard drive containing this file. you need to let chkdsk complete the scan as it may be able to recover the corrupt file and isolate the bad sector so its not used again.
if this works backup the system as your hard drive may be failing.

The registry is corrupted. To fix it all you have to do is to reload the last backup or the last known good configuration.

STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file):\System Root\System32\Config\SECURITY or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

to fix the problem, you need the Installation cd, put it in, start the setup, and enter repair console when the first blue menu comes up.

In repair console, your going to have to copy the windows\repair directory to system32\config

to fix the problem.

After the files have been copyed, Well maybe might be better if you only copy the SECURITY file. so no login details get changed.

Then restart the pc and see if it worked. If not your going to have to perform a repair installation from the xp cd.

If you need more asistance, let me know. Good luck.
