Further research indicates this is a common problem with JVC camcorders.
If it were a car there probably would have been a factory recall. I'm sending it to JVC Service,1500 Lakes Parkway,Lawrenceville,GA 30043 for repair.

Two possible cause of this problem, iris were closed(won't open) for some reason,or CCD needs replacement, some part in the US and UK are replacing this PARTS even out of warranty for free.

My LCD monitor won't light up to take a picture but it does when I review those I have taken thru the viewfinder

Most screens can be turned off for low battery usage. Check battery with tester or have it tested or replace battery and check menu and see if review screen is turned off. Rich

When I flip open the LCD or look through the viewfinder and turn on the camera and take lenscap off all I see is black with shadowy white vertical lines.

Sounds like your iris is shut. Try giving the camera a good smack with the palm of your hand near the lens. That should free up the iris. Can you view previously recorded tapes??? If so your video board might be bad. Hope this helps.

F717, protector and lens cap (question)

Had the same problem with my polarizing filter. The Sony lenscap was not a snug fit onto the polarizer. Solved the problem by purchasing a cheap third party 58mm lenscap at a retail photography shop. Cost under $5.00.

LCD Monitor on ,and the Electronic Viewfinder turned off

If you turn on the back LCD, the electronic viewfinder will remain on while in a shooting mode. There is no setting on the camera to use only the back LCD monitor while shooting. If you playback images in the Play mode, only the LCD monitor will turn on. However, if you press the Monitor button while in the Play mode, than the back LCD monitor will turn off. The image will display only in the viewfinder LCD.
