sound like pilot lite is not getting thermocouple hot. check that pilot lite flame is extending out to and touching thermocouple. If not, clean out pilot lite orface and pilot lite gas feed pipe all the way back to the main gas valve if necessary. If pilot lite flame is touching thermocouple, then replace thermocouple
Either the thermocouple connection into the gas control valve is loose or the thermocouple needs replacing. Also check the burner and pilot assembly inside the screen area for dust, dirt and insect build up. A clogged pilot can mimic a faulty thermocouple.
Hope this helps you in troubleshooting and solving the problem.
When you light the pilot lite you have to hold the button down until it gets the element hot enough to stay lit. If you hold down the button and lite the pilot and let it go right away it will go out. What to do is hold down the button and lite the pilot and continue to hold the buttn down for about 45 seconds to a minute then let it up very slowly and you will see if it is going to go out by the flame getting smaller as you let up on the button. If it does start to get smaller conitnue to hold it again for a few seconds and repeat the process of letting it up slowly. when the control element gets to the right temperature it will stay lit then turn your valve to "ON" and the fire will start up and continue to heat the water.
Failed pilot operator or thermocouple not generating enough D.C. current 30 mega volts D.C. Replace thermocouple and see if this takes care of the problem.
if its a stnding pilot turn the gas control nobe to pilot hold down light pilot when lite hold down for 30 saconds, then relese and it should stay lite.
Hi there. You must continue to hold the knob in for at least 30 seconds before releasing. If the pilot still goes out, the "thermocouple" is bad. It's the little tube in the pilot flame. To replace, remove the main burner assembly/pilot. You can get a thermocouple at any hardware store. Ask questions while you are there. Thanks Paul
Bad thermocouple that senses the heat from the pilot light. This would be evident if you lite the pilot while holding the button down for about 30 seconds. If the pilot goes out as you release the button on the gas valve replace the thermocouple.
