I have an old pc game on disk, it's Ariel's Story Studio, and I found it not long ago and wanted to play it again for nostalgia reasons. However, now matter what I do the game will not work.

You are trying to run a 32bit version program on a 64bit system, this is not allowed. Try obtaining the 64bit version of the program and load that or alternatively try CutePDF, it works well on any system.

Error message unsupported 16 bit application

16 bit software is not compatible with 64-bit engines.
The lowest number of software bits, called bit width, a 64b system can sometimes run if lucky, is 32b.
16 bits is the equivalent of 1 byte.
64 bits is therefore 4 bytes wide.
This means that the 64b system reads digitally coded instructions 4 bytes at a time, as one function to perform.
So if it tries to read all 4 bytes of a 16 bit 1 byte program it just sees meaningless garbage.
In fact, the header of the program file will ID it as 16 bits so that the 64 bit system knows not to even try to run it, as random weird instructions could corrupt or damage the computer.

Hello, this is happening because the game is a bit old and can't report your memory correctly. To fix this you have to run the game in compatibility mode, follow these steps:

1. right-click on the games shortcut and choose 'open file location'
2. find the game's executable file, right-click on it and select properties
3. click the "compatibility" tab
4. check the box "run this program in compatibility mode" and choose "windows 98/Me" or "windows
95". Apply settings.
5. Have fun playing

The CreateACard Gold 3 (CAC Gold 3) will never work with Windows 7 64bit unassumingly because the software producing company has not upgraded their software for even Vista 64bit.
I recommend you to switch to " Hallmark Card Studio Special Edition" it has all the features of CAC Gold 3. You will enjoy it as there should be no problem installing it with Windows 7 64bit.

If I am reading this right your issue is not the application but where you obtained the application. Maya 2010 is a modern design application and comes in 32 & 64 bit versions. It is not a 16 bit application.

When Windows encounters a legacy application it calls the NTVDM for the legacy application to run in.

The fact that the application is calling the NTVDM is highly suspicious. NTVDM is the NT Virtual Dos Machine, a way for legacy applications to run in NT environments.

NT environments are Windows NT 3.5, NT 4.0, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP (Home, Pro & Media Center Ed), Vista (all versions) and Windows 7.

Old (legacy) applications written for 16 bit date back to Windows 3.1 and include Windows 95, 98 and Millennium Edition.

I would obtain a copy of Maya 2010 from a reputable outlet instead of Bit Torrent as "warez" frequently contain malicious items that will infect and ruin your machine.

Unfortunately no, windows 64 bit doesn't support 32 bit or 16 bit applications so you should call the support number or go online to return the unsupported edition for a 64 bit edition (if they have one). Hope this helps.
