Without software and without a driver (came on CD with the camera) your MAC can't work with the mv430i
The good news is, Canon USA has (almost) all software and manuals and drivers online. Just goto Canon USA and download what you need.
The USB cable is only to download still images recorded on the memory card, using the software that came with the camera. To download video, you need to connect to a computer with a Firewire cable, and have video editing software on your computer to communicate with the camera.
The recorder should be formatted only by using the internal FORMAT function found in the recorder’s Menu. Formatting using the computer may corrupt system files needed to run the recorder, so computer formatting is not recommended.
If the laptop doesn't have a FireWire port (you are using the FireWire output on the cam, right?) you can buy an express card (or PCMCIA card if that's the port on your Packard Bell) with a FireWire port. They are not expensive, and that sould solve your problem.
check the SD card and see if the little tab on the side of it is slid to the position that says "lock" If you cant see the words, try just switching the tab to the other side. Since SD means Secure Digital, these cards wont do anything if the lock tab is not in the right position.
