The batteries do not last more that one photo session. This has been so since new. Why is this and can this be improved on?

  • Mark Williams Feb 02, 2014

This camera has a design flaw, in that the metal plate in the battery cover which connects the batteries in sequence is also used as a spring to make the door click shut. As the camera body is carbon composite, this mechanism connects to it and drains the batteries. Just cover the spring or the point which it connects to with adhesive tape or nail varnish and the batteries will last for ages.

Multiple possibilities exist.
How long and how many pictures do you consider as a photo session?
What size picture are you taking? High res or low res.
Are you using the flash?
Are you using picture instant preview?
Are you using auto-focus?
These will ALL use power and help to drain the battery. The 3 largest users are the preview, flash and resolution settings.

Testimonial: "I have been using the view finder, instant preview, the resolution setting is jpeg on 9mp, auto focus, auto aperture, about 10-20 shots/session."

All photos suddenly too dark, even using flash.

If you are sure you are in automatic mode, the green camera logo on the top dial, your pictures have to be correct.
The exposure compensation should not be available in automatic, so that can't be the reason. (if you are in automatic)
The only thing you could look for, is the exposure metering. There you can chose 3 modes, and I do advise to chose Multi-pattern (should be default) because then not only the centre is measured.
If the pictures stay too dark, while in automatic and Multi-pattern, i think your camera is defect. It has nothing to do with the battery. If the battery voltage drops beneath a certain point the camera will stop completely and not work half.

Err When Taking Photos.

Mine is doing the same. With all new batteries try squeezing the AA battery holder inwards to improve contact. This fixed mine temporarily. Long term you'll need to get the contact fixed by a camera tec.
