Probably you need to re install the drivers for your scanner. If you provide more details on your scanner model we can give you the link to download the drivers

Before reinstalling drivers you can try this
first unplug your computer power cable ( not enough turning it off, is to eliminate charges inside pc that can affect usb devices).
then if possible try a different scanner usb cable and in any case plug the scanner in a different usb port.

Check with Device manager whether the HP Scanner is listed over there... If you are not able to detect the HP Scanner, try uninstalling and reboot and the again install the HP software that is bundled with the Scanner.
Also check the usb connection or even check with a different usb wire.. Cheers -Parveen
I believe you are suffering from driver corruption. You may need to reinstall the drivers..
