you can do a clean install from your usb. i use this setup for all my flash drive boots.
WinSetupFromUSB - Install Windows XP from USB Flash Drive
This guide will show you, how to use WinSetupFromUSB to create a bootable USB Flash Drive including all Windows source files, plus the following installation of Windows XP. Compare to the different USB_Multiboot versions, WinSetupFromUSB comes with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and is in my opinion easier to use.
Here you can get the latest version of the program and you will also find many detailed informations about WinSetupFromUSB.
I've tested this guide with a 32-bit version of Windows XP and a 64-bit version of Windows Vista and it worked flawlessly.
Prerequisites:
All you need is:
a USB Flash Drive with at least 1GB of storage
the original Windows XP Setup CD
WinSetupFromUSB
If you use nLite to slim down your version of Windows XP, please keep the following in mind:
DO NOT remove "Manual Install and Upgrade"
under Operating System Options!
I also recommend to integrate Service Pack 3 into your Windows XP source files.
1. Preparations
Download and install WinSetupFromUSB. Default installation path is C:\WinSetupFromUSB.
Create a new folder with the name WINXPCD in the root directory of drive C:\ and copy all files from your Windows XP Setup CD into this folder. Depending on your version of Windows XP, the content of C:\WINXPCD should look approximately like this:

The following files will show you, which Service Pack is already integrated into your CD:
Connect the USB Flash Drive to your PC and start WinSetupFromUSB. It should show up under USB Disk Selection :

3. Select your Source Path
Click on Browse under Windows 2000/XP/2003 Source and navigate to the folder with your Windows XP Source Files. It should be C:\WINXPCD:

4. Format USB Flash Drive
PeToUSB or HP Format Tool are used to format the USB Flash Drive. There is no need to download these programs seperately as they are already included in WinSetupFromUSB.
USB Flash Drives up to 2GB should be formatted with PeToUSB in FAT16, USB Flash Drives with 4GB or more with HP Format Tool in FAT32.
I will use PeToUSB to format my Kingston Data Traveler with 2GB.
In the main window of WinSetupFromUSB click PeToUSB under Format target using to start the program. The USB Flash Drive should show up under Destination Drive. Check USB Removable, Enable Disk Format and Quick Format. Uncheck Enable File Copy under File Copy Options :

Click Start and answer the following two questions "Continue?" with Yes.
All existing volumes and data will be lost!
If everything goes well, the message "Operation Completed Successfully!" should appear. Click OK and close PeToUSB.
The process with HP Format Tool is similar.
5. Copy Windows XP Source Files
To start the process of copying the Windows XP source files to the USB Flash Drive, click GO in the main window of WinSetupFromUSB. Depending on the write speed of your USB Flash drive it may take a while to copy all files.

At the end the following notice about the Windows installation process should be displayed:

Click OK and close WinSetupFromUSB with EXIT.
6. Windows Installation - Part 1
Connect the USB Flash Drive to your PC and turn on the computer. Press ESC at the boot screen and you will be able to select the USB Flash Drive as your boot device from the boot menu.
The ESC key is used by ASUS for the Eee PC series.
Other manufacturers may use other keys, e.g. F8 or F12.
After booting from USB Flash Drive, the following menu should be displayed:

Press Enter or wait 10 seconds to get to the next menu:

Second part of XP Home Edition setup+Start Windows for first time
First part of Windows XP Home Edition setup is already selected. Press Enter or wait 10 seconds to start the Text mode part of setup. During this part you can create, delete and format partitions and finally the setup files are copied to your hard disk. At the end the system will restart automatically.
7. Windows Installation - Part 2
After restart, boot the PC again from your USB Flash Drive. The same menu should be displayed:

Second part of XP Home Edition setup+Start Windows for first time
Second part of XP Home Edition setup+Start Windows for first time is already selected. Press Enter or wait 10 seconds to start the GUI mode part of setup. During this part you will be asked for your product key, timezone, usernames and other necessary informations. At the end the system will restart automatically.
8. Windows Installation - Part 3
After restart, boot the PC again from your USB Flash Drive. The same menu should be displayed:

Press Enter or wait 10 seconds to get to the next menu:

Second part of XP Home Edition setup+Start Windows for first time
Second part of XP Home Edition setup+Start Windows for first time is already selected. Press Enter or wait 10 seconds to Start Windows for the first time. The Windows installation process will be finished and finally the Windows Desktop will appear.
DO NOT disconnect the USB Flash Drive too early!
At next startup you can boot into Windows from your hard disk.

If you want to keep the repair option, you can reduce the time to display the operating system options from 30 to 5 seconds:

How to reinstall Windows XP operating system or installing fresh copy of Windows XP on your computer.
If your Windows XP operating system had problem due to corrupted files, viruses problem or you want to upgrade your system. This procedure will guide you in reinstalling your current Windows XP or installing fresh copy.
After this installing process, you need all your hardware drivers like Chipset Intel driver, LAN driver, Sound driver, WAN driver, Webcam driver and others for the computer to be fully operational. Otherwise, do not proceed on reinstalling you operating system if your do not have those hardware drivers.
CDROM drive is required for installing Windows XP. If you don't have in your notebook computer, use external CDROM drive to connect in your computer using a USB cable.
1. To start with, you need to back up your in blank CD all your important files before you begin installation produre because all the data will be wipe out.
2. When ready, start your computer and when booting press F2 to BIOS setting.
3. On BIOS menu, choose the BOOT setting and change the priority boot to CDROM, exit and save.
In some laptops, you can skip this BIOS setting process by repeatedly pressing F9 key or F10key when booting your computer and it will run boot priority on CD.
4. Once you exit from BIOS, you computer will reboot and a message will appear " Press any key to boot from CD", press any key to enter into WINDOWS XP SET UP.
5. Belows instruction messages will appear:
* To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER * To repair Windows XP installation using recovery console, press R * To quit set up without installing Windows XP, press F3
Press ENTER to initiate the installation.
6. You will go to Windows XP license agreement and press F8 to agree.
7. You will ask you if you want to REPAIR or REINSTALL the operating system. It will appear like this. Just press ESC to proceed.
A. To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R. B. To continue installing fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press ESC.
From repairing your operating system, it will not removed all your files and other software installed in your computer including your hardware drivers installed. Just fixing the operating system.
For reinstalling the operating system, you need to back up all you files because it will wipe out all you datas in your computer.
8. After that, it ask you where partition you want to install the operating system. The message will display like this :
C : Partition1 [NTFS] D : Partition2 [NTFS] Unpartitioned Space
Use the directional key to navigate and choose C: Partition1 if you want reinstalling Windows XP and press enter.
If you want clean copy of Windows XP, you need to delete both partition by pressing L and install clean copy at Unpartitioned space. By these procedure, you will have C: drive only. D: Drive is delete.
9. After choosing the desire partition. this will appear :
* Format the partition using NTFS files system * Format the partition using the NFTS file
I suggest to choose the first line which is the quick format. The 2nd line take too much time to install the operating system. Press to initiate the installation and it will be finish and reboot automatically. PART OF WINDOWS INSTALLATION IS FINISHED.
If you had interrupted installation which is asking for certain driver file, your CD installer maybe damage which cause files to be unreadable. Try to replace the new Windows XP installer CD to proceed and until finished installing OS.
10. Once it reboots, this time do not boot from CD or do not press any key to go to PART2 OF WINDOWS XP INSTALLATION PROCESS.
11. On the opening, regional and laguage option will appear, jus click next.
12. The it will ask to type your name & organization. Put you name and company if any and click next
13. Then, it will ask for CD key and type the 25 character CD key and click next
14. Then it will ask for computer name. You can change or leave it and click next.
15. Then, set your date and time zone and click next.
16. Then, it will ask you for workgroup and computer domain, just leave it and click next.
17. Now wait until the installation process end and it will again restart automatically.
18. Again, do not boot from CD and display setting will appear. Just click OK.
19. welcom to Microsoft Windows screen will appear. Just click next.
20. Helps protect your PC will appear and choose Turn on Automatic Updates ( Only if you install genuine Windows XP). Otherwise, I suggest to choose "Not right not" if you are installing copy only of Windows XP.
21. Who will use this computer message will appear. Just type your name on the first box and click next.

It's me that windows NT loder LDR is missing if this file (NTLDR) is missing windows can not boot so you have to make an upgrade or reinstall your operating system vote please :)

NTLDR is the main file of windows XP to boot it properly. You can recover this file without installing the full windows XP. Follow the given steps to recover the NTLDR file from windows XP CD. First insert the Windows XP bootable CD into your CD-drive and reboot your computer. When your computer prompted a message to press any key to boot from the CD, press the any key. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows and now log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key then pressing enter. Here you will be prompted for your administrator password, enter your that password then copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example you are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E" to drive c. This letter may be different on your computer.

Hi there. Clean the lens on the CD/DVD rom and make sure that the install disk is clean and free of fingerprint smudges, then try to install again, one more thing to clean is the system memory, take it out and clean the contacts and slots with a soft, dry, clean paintbrush.
OK I managed to install XP on Targa Traveller on 1591! With the CD of window XP it is necessary to make F6 for the starting up of the installation and to use a diskette with the pilots(drivers) SATA of NVidia nforce. hi bcookie11, if your windows xp installer is a legitimate one, return it and ask for another copy, sometimes, the cd is faulty, that is why you can't copy some files from it.
i would hazard a guess that you are using a pirated corporate copy of windows, as there are 2 files on the disc that cannot be copied so you should just start again and when prompted for the two files to be installed press esc to skip it.
You wont be able to get any support or updates from microsoft and unless service pack 2 is already built in the instalation which i doubt, the product key of the software will have to be changed in order to install it.
