Dell Dimension 4700c Desktop. Old 80g hard drive crashed. Installed new 320 g hard drive. I have the original CD's for Windows (Printer Drivers, etc.)
Downloaded the Windows Programs. Boots up OK but can't seem to get ethernet working. Will not connect with web. Try to program modem with modem CD but it keeps telling me ethernet is not present (or connected, or can't find it).
(Can I or) How do I restore original factory programing? Am I missing some key CD's / instructions?

If your Dell computer had Vista installed then you can use your copy of Vista CD and you can use the product installation code that is printed on the Windows label that is attached to your Dell. When you insert the Windows CD into your Dell and boot up your computer then select the CD as the boot device (ie 4=IDE CD).
After Windows is installed and activated then you need to install the Dell computer's device drivers. You can download the device drivers from Dell WEB site, the support download page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop, better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on the bottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Tag label is missing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages, the Service Tag number will be displayed). This will open the page where the specific drivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you select the Windows of the drivers for your Windows operating system. Click on this link to download the drivers: - http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen
No the O.S. will not still be n the system. You will have to reload it. If you have the original disk, that is. Also take ALL of the pertinent info. you want and load to a disk. Such as, pictures, documents, all downloads you have put in the system including the setup. If you don't know how, email me and I can help. Otherwise, insert a blank C.D.,wait for auto play, select the programs, and or pic. or doc.s. right click and choose send to unless you have the option of "burn to" then use that one. I hoped this helps.
If you've got your jumper settings wrong and installed your os on the 127 GB section of the 320 GB Hard drive and you change jumper settings and then you have problems you may need to reinstall the old hard drive as master and the new hard drive as slave. Reformat the new hard drive as 320 GB, and as a bootable drive. You can either do a disk copy from old to new or reinstall your os on the 320 GB drive. Please let me know how this goes. You can get to me @ [email protected]
Basically when you install a new boot drive you need to install Windows operating system on the new hard drive, also the device drivers (eg video, audio, modem, LAN etc), your programs and data. The reason programs has to be installed is because the installation process copied DLL files to the System folders and makes changes to the registry.
You can only copy your data onto the new hard disk.
To avoid copying your data to the new hard drive, you can set up the old hard drive as second hard drive (ie. slave drive), if you delete the redundant folders and leave only the data folders then you have an adddition 40Gb of disk space.
take off the side panel of the computer and listen to it a little closer when its on. there are very few actual moving parts so i should be fairly easy to isolate the noise. if it's a fan anywhere in the computer it can be replaced for less than 20 dollars and shouldn't be left till it dies, replace it , it's protecting something.
If it's a cd drive making the noise , it can be replaced for 25 dollars.
If it's the hard drive, then you need to back up your important files AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, because when it crashes, you generally have a hard time retrieving stored information from it.
hard drives can be replaced for 50 to 150 dollars depending on type and how large it is.
Most times the noise from a computer comes from the fans and power supply, then the cd/dvd roms , then the hard drive : so check them in that order. post here again if you need further assistance.. Regards
First put the hdd installation cd into the cd drive and try to boot. This should install the hdd driver as well as start formatting the new hdd. After the drive is formatted take out the hdd cd & insert the Windows installation cd into the drive. Boot. Windows should start installing on your new drive. After Windows is installed check the Dell support site for updated drivers for your system. Install drivers as needed. Any other software you had on your old drive will need to be reinstalled to the new drive. Hope this helps & please rate my answer. Thanks.
Place the windows cd in the drive and re-boot.You should be prompted to press any key to boot from the cd.After that, just follow the on-screen instructions. It's really pretty simple!Hope this helps!
