Thanks for trying to help but I am not able to sync my desktop pc with the hp jornada 720 handheld pc - it does not recognize it after downloading ActiveSync. Any solution???
Are you connecting from dock to USB on computer, or serial to USB via a USB-serial adapter? UBS-serial adapters are notorious for not recognizing attached serial hardware. What kind of errors are the Jornada and the computer throwing? Can you give any specific error numbers?
If you are connecting using the serial cable to a serial port on your computer you need to make sure that the Jornada is trying to connect to the correct COM port (and that the computer is allowing connections through the correct COM port). Do this by:
1. Open Device Manager (R-Click on My Computer - Properties - Hardware - Device Manager)
2. Expand the "Ports (COM)" plus sign
3. Beside each COM port's name it will say (COM#) - the # tells you which port the COM is
4. Go into ActiveSync and open Connection Settings (in the File menu in ActiveSync 4.5 - the latest)
5. Make sure all the check boxes are checked and that the correct number COM port is selected in the drop down menu under "Allow connections to one of the following:"
6. Connect your Jornada via the serial cable, make sure the Jornada is on and connected to power cable (I have had more success with the power on - may or may not affect your problem)
7. Click the "Connect..." button in ActiveSync. The Jornada should be detected.
If your computer has an infrared port you could try that, I have had a lot of success with infrared connections with my Jornada. Also, try installing ActiveSync on another computer that has a serial port and try connecting the Jornada to that computer. It may be a problem with your computer.
An older version of ActiveSync should not make a difference. The facilities are the same, just slightly rearranged.
Let me know if you need any help! Good luck - I know how frustrating it is when it doesn't work how you want!
Ok, it may just be that your computer doesn't have a COM port. You can tell by looking at the back of the computer tower; the COM port is shaped like a trapezoid and has nine small holes. What cables did the Jornada come with? Are you using the dock to connect the Jornada to the computer?
Try getting ActiveSync to connect by going from Step 4 above and making sure the "Allow connections to one of the following:" dropbox is set to USB. Also try connecting to another computer to see if it is your computer at fault.

My desktop is XP. Thanks for your offer to help. Yes, I have tried a couple of different usb ports. Any assistance would be much appreciated.
If you remember what you wanted to ask - please let me know. I am really getting frustrated with what I thought would be a great little thing.
Thanks.
Maybe I'm just not a tech person.I did #1 but have a list but nothing that says "Ports (COM) plus sign.
Active-Sync 4.5 is set up on my pc because I use it for my smartphone and it works with that. I tried again connecting the Jornada via USB - all the check boxes are checked and still no connection.
I have been so frustrated - not being able to use it all this time. If there are any more possibilities - please please let me know and thanks for trying.
