Is my new Shure Beta 87A microphone a fake

I just bought a Shure Beta 87A microphone from USA. I think it might be a fake. Is there any way of being certain it is an original?

    When the screen is removed the capsule is completely different.
    The screw on the body is missing.

Unfortunately, there are many types of counterfeits out there. So, differences that you see posted online might not apply to all counterfeits.That is, various factories in China produce the counterfeits differently. The best thing to do is to completely avoid unreliable sources, such as eBay and Craigslist. Be extremely suspicious of any products on the internet.

    My microphone was purchased from Musicians Friend. When i called last week, they said they have no record of the order! I have been purchasing equipment from them many years. I took it to Guitar Center, they suggested I contact Shure and said it was a very good mic.

Differences that are obvious:

  • the grill mesh on the capsule is different (thinner wire);
  • the colour is different (darker);
  • the label is slightly different (eg text size and font);
  • the wiring in the capsule is incorrect in colour;
  • the weight is less (about 8g);
  • the rim at the base where the cable attaches is a different design;
  • when screwing the capsule on to the body there is not a lot of thread;
  • the sound is not as good

I have a Shure Model Beta 87A, that is making a continual static sound through the main speakers.

Question edited for correct maker name Shire/Shure and what it is.
Question moved from Televisions to the correct category.

If it has been dropped by someone, it needs a new capsule, but first check the wiring and shielding on the cables and plugs.

Like to find out what's worng with my mic.

It's a condenser mic, so I suspect you aren't getting power to it. Make sure the phantom power is turned on on the mixer.

Need to replace the male xlr output connector of my Beta 87a

Very doubtful this is a proprietary part. Look online at the Nuetrik and Switchcraft catalogs and you'll likely find it.

Weaker sound,not a fake.

Check the wiring at the xlr first, maybe 1 leg of the balanced output has come off or maybe a bad solder joint inside.

If its weak and thin then it sound like this might help.

Hope this helps
Thanks for using FixYa

How find orginal shure mic?how? and how to make cable? what is balance and unbalaned cable? better balence ya unblance cable

Unfortunately, there are many counterfeit Shure microphones out there. Each of the counterfeit manufacturers makes the fakes slightly different. Thus, there is no one thing to look for. The best thing to do is to purchase the mic from an authorized Shure dealer. Then, you can trust that it will be genuine.A balance cable has three wires (such as XLR connectors), and unbalance cable uses just two wires (such as a two conductor 1/4" connector.

Shure Beta 87a - very weak signal compared to other 87a's in set. Not cabling, not amp.

Hello again..it's possible, just possible you have a fake beta 87a. A knockoff. Compare the physical characteristics of all your beta 87a's.

I have a Shure Beta 87a very weak output signal

Possible cause...microphone dropped on the ground.

Or possibly the capsule is fried from too much spit getting to it thru the windscreen.

Or possibly a short in one of the 3 pins/wires located in the housing where the xlr connects.

How can I tell if a Shure Beta 87C is genuine of fake?

Check the packaging.

Its heavier when you hold it.

The shure sticker are printed perfectly on the case and the mic it self.

And definitely they sound better.

Which is better, shure beta 87a or 87c?. thanks

Hi,

It's depending where you gonna use the microphone.
For vocals I prefer the 87A, because it's a hypercardiod.

Gerard
