Your lack of drive capacity is going to continue to haunt you, even if you're able to clear enough space to save your files the drive will not respond as wanted. Your best bet is to purchase another drive for this sole purpose. Thank you, Dana
You indicated that ..."most of the drive's capacity is used."
That may be your problem. When you make a backup you need room for the software to create temporary files before completeing the backup. These temp files are deleted once the backup is complete. There's no real rule regarding the amount of extra space to have available, but I use 10% of the total size of the backup and have not had any problems. I'm also backing up to Maxtor One Touch II.
With the price of hard drives dropping, I have to agree with dnewcomb1 and go out a buy another drive. You can get a 1TB drive for around $150
nancyjone97, OK don't be afraid, you may need to simply reinstall the software that came with the Maxtor Drive. The first Maxtor I had needed a software reinstall, then everything was fine. If you don't have the software or install instructions, they are available on the Maxtor site. For future reference, I'd recommend Seagate drives for reliability. Even though virtualy all drives are manufactured by a very few suppliers, Seagate has higher quality control standards.
