About 5 days ago I noticed a strong chemical smell (like open permanent markers or nail polish remover) in my kitchen. The smell permiates the whole house, but is strongest in the kitchen area when I close off that area. The refrigerator and freezer still worked and the smell is not inside. I could not find any other source of smell. I have since moved the refrigerator out of the main house and the smell still exists in the kitchen. Could it be that if the coolant leaked onto the floor it has been absorbed into the cushion/lino flooring? The smell does not cause headaches. I live in the UK.

No. The coolant cannot leak as a liquid and soak into the floor. Also, the smell of the coolant (refrigerant) does not have the acetone/ketone/laquer thinner smell that you are describing, and if someway the smell originated from the frig, the smell would without a doubt be inside the frig as well. You need to look frosome container stored in a cabinet or stored on conrete floor that has rusted or opened some way and the thinner/cleaner/solvent has leaked from such a containerwithout notice. Rag burnt, is it safe to use the micro? The rag burnt badly, there was smoke and a strong bad smell persists. Is it safe to keep on using the micro, what can be done about the smell?

Hello -

It is probably safe to use the microwave oven after removing the burned smell.

I found some methods for removing a burned smell from a microwave.

From:
https://blog.bostonappliance.net/5-foolproof-ways-to-get-burnt-popcorn-smell-out-of-the-microwave/

(Quote)
1. Fill a bowl with 1/2 cup water and 1 tablespoon white vinegar.
  • Microwave it for 4-5 minutes and leave it with the door shut for 10-15 minutes.
  • Steam will loosen smell-causing detritus stuck to the walls. Vinegar absorbs odors, even stubborn ones like burnt popcorn smell.
  • After the waiting period, remove the bowl and wipe the inside of the microwave down with a paper towel
2. Not good enough? Okay - soak a sponge with vinegar.Place some baking soda on top and microwave the sponge for 25 seconds.
  • Wipe the inside of the microwave with the sponge.
  • Don't forget the glass tray and the microwave door.
3. If steps 1-2 don't remove all the grime, soak cotton balls with acetone-free nail polish remover and wipe down the inside of the microwave.
  • Even stubborn stains should come out.
  • Wipe down the inside with soap, then vinegar water, to remove the polish remover.
  • We recommend following through with step 4 to get rid of chemical smells.
4. Banish the remaining smells with the power of citrus.
  • Peel two oranges or slice a lemon in half.
  • Place the orange peels or lemon slices in a bowl of water (1-2 cups).
  • Microwave it for 4 minutes. Watch closely to ensure that the water stays in the bowl and the citrus peels do not burn.
  • If possible, leave the bowl in the microwave (with the door closed) for 12 hours.
  • Too time-consuming, or just not doable for you? That's okay too. Let the bowl sit in the closed microwave for half an hour then, if the burnt smell persists, continue to step 5.
5. Still bad odors in your microwave? Leave an open box of baking soda on your microwave tray overnight.
  • It will neurtalize the odor without adding to the smelly situation in any way.
  • You can also place coffee grounds from your morning coffee in a bowl in the microwave all day while you are at work.
  • If you don't mind coffee smell, you can microwave 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds in a half cup of water for 2-3 minutes to expedite the process.

Best wishes.

I accidentally spilled nail polish remover on my macbook. it works fine now but i've noticed the fan runs more frequently now. is this normal?

it's possible you got some inside your mac. When it heats up, can you smell the remover? It might be that it dried inside and is being reheated every time you use the mac.

Kenmore side-by-side has CHEMICAL SMELL ODOR inside.

You have a freon leak. With this only being 5 years old, iot's probably worth repairing, unless you are just able to buy a new one. I would have a local tech come out and check it before tossing it. I hope this answers your question and gives you some resolution. I hope to work with you again, so please record our name, email and phone number for future needs. Have a great evening!

We have a combination carbon monoxide/gas alarm and the gas alarm went off. We are having a girls party and it is in the basement and they are using nail polish and nail polish remover, some of it spilled...

This is normal your detector is sensing particles in the air.
Also You should never buy a duel detector. Because if one becomes
defective you loose protection from both detectors. It is recommended
to use two separate detectors, because different detectors are installed at different heights in the house. Not all gases are the same weight.
Also carbon or gas detectors should be replaced every five years. and smoke detectors every 10 years.

I have a smell in my refidgerator, very chemically, like nail polish remover, thats as close as I can get to the actual smell. I had a professional come look at and for $60 all I got was he has never seen...

Could be cleaning product residue.
Change brands - or flavour. Check drain hole is clear at the back.
It often gets blocked - leading to musty smells.

Plasma TV smell?

i had the same prob and thought it would burn off. It didn't after a month. Read the comments and tried the plug direct into wall socket plus i washed off the tv surface several times. Now no smell. Not sure which action cured the problem but i'm now happy. It was so bad i had to leave a window open and at times i would gag from the smell.
