Yes, you can use your printer on windows 7. it is fully compatibile with win 7. you can find drivers on the official samsung site. here is the link:

You can replace toner for that printer only with genuine Samsung toner because refilled toners are not working.

try the ml-2510 drivers there were no win 98/ me drivers for the 1640.

Driver for Samsung ML-1640 for WIN98SE

I got the same problem. It seems they did not develop specific drivers for win98se. However, I found that you can print using the drivers for the old Samsung ML-2510. Win98se drivers for that printer can still be downloaded from Samsung website. I've been using the 2510 drivers with the 1640 printer for a couple of months, and worked fine so far. It seems very little change in electronics from the 2510 to the 1640 model.
You need also Virtual Printer Port for USB from microsoft.
