What is the difference between putting your computer to sleep or in hibernation

putting a computer to sleep is not the same as hibernation because sleep mode still is technically powered on it's just in a relaxed state or low-powered state whereas hibernation takes everything that's in Ram writes it to hard drive and then completely Powers down hope that helps

I put my Dell Dimension 9200 XPS 410 into sleep mode after connecting a wireless keyboard and mouse and the only way to wake it is to hold the power button in until it shuts off and then switch the power...

I would say it is in the Hibernation Mode To get it out of this mode you need to go to your Control Panel, open "POWER OPTION'S" and deselect the Hibernation mode then reboot.

How to wake msi u130 from sleeping?tnx

If it is in sleep pressing any key or moving the mouse will generally wake it up. If you left the computer unplugged in sleep mode then it most likely ran out of power. If your using hibernate I would recommend not using it as it has so many issues.... :) If you have to hit the power button to wake it up then it's either shutdown or in hibernate. FYI there will generally be an amber light on to indicate sleep mode. If no lights it's most likely not in sleep mode.
Comment if you need additional assistance.

My dell Studio laptop takes too long to wake from sleep mode and the monitor just flickers when i try to switch on

If you use Windows 7, u might have hybrid sleep activated. This is similar to hibernate. When u choose SLEEP, your computer goes to hibernate. Sometimes this hibernate just hangs. You have to reboot computer.
Try pressing the power button for several seconds (10-15). It should power off the laptop.
If not, unplug the charger and remove the battery for a few minutes. Then try to start it up again.

Video not waking from sleep mode, can I slap a card in this machine?

Sleep mode is problematic in Windows XP and always has been. It works well on some computers and not on others. Before looking at the Video card as the culprit I would suggest you simply turn it off which will more than likely solve your problem. You do not need to use the Sleep Mode. Turn your monitor off to save energy. To turn Sleep Mode off;
  1. Begin by first clicking on the Start Button.
  2. Then click on the Control Panel icon located in the right column of the Start Menu.
  3. Now click on the Power Options icon to display the Power Options Properties Window.
  4. If your Start Menu is set to the Classic View, then begin by clicking on the Start Button.
  5. Then click on Settings, then click on the Control Panel icon to open up the Control Panel.
  6. Now, click on the Hibernate tab located at the top of the power options screen.
  7. Then uncheck the Enable hibernation option with your mouse if it happens to be enabled.
  8. Now click on the OK button to save your changes and exit the Power Options windows.
  9. And then close the Control Panel to return back to your Window session.
  10. Your computer will no longer enter into a hibernation sleep state when you are away from it.

Computer goes in to sleep/ hibernate mode and I can not wake it up without shutting it off, and restarting

Hi,
If we are talking "hibernate", then that's what the computer does - it saves the whole memory contents on the hard disk and shuts down. You then have to power it up and it boots like always on power up, but instead of loading the system the usual way, it reads the hibernation file and restores the state in which it was when hibernated.
"Sleep" or "standby" mode is different - the system stops execution of all the running programs, switches the processor into low-speed, low-power mode, executing only the basic functions of waiting for wake-up signal. Depending on machine and settings, it will be woken up by keyboard event, system event (like laptop battery running out - time to hibernate), network activity, or the power switch.
It should wake up when the Fn key on keyboard is pressed, the lid is lfted up (if it was closed of course), or when you momentarily press the power button. If it does not, then something is wrong with your ACPI/Power Management setup, and/or there are some drivers missing or corrupt. You can try going to IBM/Lenovo website and looking for updated system drivers for your model.

it's probably in hibernate mode. go to your display properties ->screen saver, click the power tab and check the hibernate tab, try disabling hibernate.
Sometimes, if a machine won't properly wake from sleep, there may be a bug in the BIOS, you can try updating to the latest BIOS for your machine. Check the manufacturer's website to see if an update is available.

Hit the keyboard keys. It is better to just turn sleep and hibernate off and just use a screen saver or tun it off.
