If it is a wall unit, it has an over temp safety switch which is most likely tripping from dust preventing proper airflow across it . A good cleaning should cure this.
The pilot generator (aka thermocouple) has gone out. This is the little peg that is mounted close to the front of the burner. The flame heats the thermocouple and it puts out a millivolt current that holds the gas valve open after you release the button. The TC is no longer putting out enough current to hold the valve open.
I beleive the part # is TT15c-11, (about $15)
That hole should only be a problem, if a strong draft comes thru and blows the pilot out. But that hole may also be for match lighting the pilot in an emergency. The older models like yours, had that feature. Check it closely, before you decide to block off the hole.
the pilot says on yes ? if not pilot could be blocked and need cleaning out or thermocouple needs changing if pilot is staying on then there could be a limit switch shutting off too soon , or burner needs cleaning
Go to the Dyno-Go website, to see if they have a mauel available there.
Also you can type in the brand name in the search engine, and hopefully download a free one. If not, then check ebay for the maual
Stays on high soon as you take off pilot
