Question about Sylvania 6620LG 20 in. EDTV-Ready LCD Television
I have a Sylvania 6620LG TV manufactured in June 2006. Do I need a DTV converter? Some websites say it is HDTV-ready, others say EDTV. Which is correct, and what is the difference?
The ;quick answer is YES, you will need a converter box to receive digital broadcasts. This set has only an analog tuner built-in. That is why it is HDTV "ready" (ready for you to add a tuner).
As for HDTV vs EDTV it is a matter of resolution. Your set is capable of EDTV resolution, which is better than SDTV (standard definition TV) but not quite as good as HDTV. With a digital tuner you will be able to view all digital programming, even HD, and it will look excellent, though not quite as sharp as a set with higher definition.

EDTV is a 16:9 capable progressive 480p TV that can display HD programming in the 480p format and always has an ATSC tuner. Standard def tv is 480i or interlaced, it shows 1/2 of the picture and then the other half in 1/30 of a second intervals, EDTV has 2x this rate so it looks more fluid in hi motion scenes. Just short of HD, sort of a HD downconverted picture.
