We have two Brother IntelliFax 4100 machines. They are used as standalone fax machines. We are not using the printer or copier features at all.
6 Months ago, one fax machine started faxing solid black pages. Reports print fine and there are no error messages, but the the receiver gets a full page of solid black.
I assumed it was just some bad error, but the second machine started doing the same exact thing.
Again, it prints fine and doesn't report any errors. The scan window is clean. Does anyone have any ideas? I found someone reporting a similar problem with a different model IntelliFax in Amazon.com reviews.
I have a Brother's Intellifax 2800 that sends black pages.

Re: Brother IntelliFax 4100 sending solid black pages
It sounds like the CIS (scanner) has failed in both machines. Its no generally not a common problem. I would change one every six months if I was lucky.
It may point to something in your environment. I have have seen rust build up on the contacts of the scanner cause this problem. So if you have high moisture or are close to the ocean this maybe a problem.

if the faxes going out have the line but coming in print out clear then the glass at the document feeder is dirty and probably needs cleaning.. check under the feeder cover and look for a glass piece where the documents go in this picks up dirt and typex and when it scans the document it thinks its on the original.. a soft cloth and some glass cleaner should clean it off..
Try to copy a document. If the copy comes out black then the the
scanner is dirty. Clean the scanner glass (products on the market that
clean by sending through the scanner) and try to copy again. If after
cleaning the scanner, the copy is still black you have a scanner issue
and the laser/scanner unit will need replacement. Best of luck and

There are two possible solutions. Is the machine sitting on top of metal? The machine will send black pages when there is static charge. You can put a rubber mat under the machine or use a static guard.
The second solution is to put the machine in maintenance and reset the scanner. Unplug the machine, put your finger on the menu key first and then re-plug the line while holding the menu key, in about 30 seconds all the lights will flash and the display will say maintenance. Release the menu Key and press 55 and this will reset the scanner; if scanner error comes up the machine will need to be serviced. Press stop and then 99 this will exit you out of maintenance. If the machine does not have an error try making a copy of blank sheet of paper and see if there is any improvement. As a routine clean the scanner glass with soft lint free cloth and isopropyl alcohol also.
