My heat pump will not come on in HEAT or A/C. I thought I might have a simple defrost control board problem, but still no go after replacing the board and the defrost relay. I checked the pressure switch and it is not tripped. I've checked all the circuit breakers and they, too, are all set. I've checked the outside unit using the "test" switch inside on the start relay and the unit will come on, but won't stay running on it's own. When I select HEAT, I wait the necessary five minutes for the unit to switch and it keeps switching to AUX HEAT. In A/C the unit does nothing

Hi; Need more info. How old is the equipment, look on the outside unit data plate it will give the built date usually in the top right corner. Also heat pumps can run with a faulty defrost board. I would check for control voltage at the secondary side of the transformer should be atleast 24 volts ac. Also the test post on the defrost board are for troubleshooting a defrost problem not an operational problem. When the posts are temporarely shorted the condensor will go into a defrost cycle This step will let the tech. know if defrost is operating normally. Also I have seen a reset switch manualy reset but not reinergize the control voltage. Also the outdoor unit has a delay timer that will wait for freon press. to equalize befor letting the unit operate. One more thing do You now if Your tstat is operating normally. One more idea is the defrost sensor if faulty it can leave the condensor in a defrost state of operation. This intern will sometimes go to heat strips because they are used in the defrost cycle to warm up the air conditioning going on durring a defrost cycle. One more thought is does the control contactor have 24 to 27 volts going to it if so replace the contactor. To test this using a voltage meter and touch after waiting 5 min. both sides of the coil. Remember voltage is deadly so ..When in doubt call a qualified tech.I ASSUME NO LIABILITY FOR INJURIES TO YOU OR THE EQUIPMENT BE CAREFULL!!! IF YOU GROUND YOURSELF BETWEEN 230VOLTS THIS BE VERY BAD...alpharome416

1: Did I damage my heat pump? 2: Should I simply replace defrost sensor & board?

Well you need to set your defrost cycle on every 30min,that doesn't mean it comes on every 30 min,it just checks it,there's little black or white switches on the board and on the door it show you how to change them for your time,

I have a trane outoor heat pump,twx736a100a2,coil freezes over.I had service tech. come to repair it twice, replaced relay, outdoor thermastat, checked freon,$500!..It worked fine for entire cold month of...

THERE is not a whole lott left not quite sure what all you have had done by post but i will let you know that the unit will run on a timed period based on outdoor defrost control board and once that time elapses and unit is still runnning it will check the defrost thermostat on the coils if the coils are cold enough (ie: frosted) the thermostat will send a signal back to board to go into defrost. the reversing valve actually switches back over to a air conditioner while mean while your indoor supplemental heat comes on rather it be electric or gas if they have it wired right. so that being said you could have a bad defrost control board if they have already replaced the thermostat outside. also if unit is low on refrigerant will freeze up ...lastly i want to point out not sure what your location is but when it gets down to 30 degree temps the heatpump will frost up it shouldn't be a block of ice but will frost up and look like snow on in completely normal. i tell people here in texas with heat pumps anything below 35 to go ahead and run the emergency heat just so you have warmer air and a stable home temp... yes it does use more electricity initialy ,but if you can warm a house in 2 hours with e-heat and it takes the heat pump most of the day running what is really costing you more? hope this helps and good luck to you please vote

I have a goodman heat pump model# ssz140301 where is the defrost timer located on the heat pump

In the out door unit, Remove to cover there should be a control board in there defrost time is usually adj by 30,60,90 min settings on the board. If is freezing up try to adj time or the unit could have a bad sensor or control board.

Goodman package- no heat below 30 degrees outside

I believe the unit you are describing is a heat pump. Heat pump are great when the temperature isn't below 30 With low ambient temps. outside it is much more efficient and comfortable to run aux. electric heat from the heat pump.

RUUD Central Air/Heat Pump

you may have lost your refrigerant and the unit is shut off on low pressure.

You can check the unit's charge by turning on the indoor fan and pushing the ourtdoor contactor down(the relay with heavy wires going in). With the unit runnig for a couple minuits does the large copper line coming into the outdoor unit from the indoor coil get cold to the touch?
If not you have lost your refrigerant

3 amp fuse blows after three hours on Goodman 4 ton 16 seer pump

I would suspect you have a problem in the defrost circuit of your heat pump. there are a couple of things you can try. first just run the system on emergency heat and see what happens. you could have a defrost board that is shorting when it kicks into defrost. it sends a signal back to the furnace so it will come on during defrost. if you do not blow a fuse as long as you are running in emergency heat, i would suspect the defrost control board. also you could have a dead short in the wire that runs from the "w" terminal on furnace control board, out to the heat pump. keep in mind that any of the wires could be the cause and i am just tying to give you the most common things. your furnace will still run if you unhook all the low voltage wiring out at the heat pump. if you do this and stop blowing fuses. you know it is something on that wiring. goodl luck.

RUUD Central Air/Heat Pump

Start with the simplest first it,s not fun but it's necessary EVERY TIME. Clean your evaporator and condenser coil, change your air filter. Getting to the evap. coil is often a real headache and a result doesn't get done often. When its clogged as you probably know the refrigerant can't absorb heat at the coil so it tries to absorb heat on the way to the compressor freezing the hot gas line the safety circuits that protect the heat pump compressor from getting liquid refrigerant back to the compressor almost immediately will take the compressor of line (looking somewhat like a defrost cycle). I hope this helps it's a tough repair GL!
