Windows Vista has the basic drivers for HP deskjet printers. Please follow the steps below:
1. Just turn off your computer, and then connect the parallel cable to the computer and printer.
2. Turn on the computer. You will be prompted to a Found New Hardware window.
3. Select Locate and Install Driver. Make sure to click Allow if the User Account Control screen pops up.
4. Windows will search for the drivers, if it was able locate the drivers then the installation is complete. If not then click Cancel.
5. Go to Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Printers. Select Add Printer.
6. Click Add a local printer. Then click Next.
7. Select Use an existing port. It should be LPT1 (Printer Port). Then click Next.
8. On the Install the printer driver screen, select HP in the list of manufacturers. Then select the model of your printer. If it is not listed, click HP Deskjet 500c. Click Next.
9. Type the name of the printer, then click Next. The printer driver installs. You may click Print a test page to test if it is working.
10. Click Finish.
