I have a hp pavillion zv5000 ive just acquired it so i dont have any idea on what is wrong with it but the previous ownerss explanation was 'it just wouldnt turn on one day' so heres the problem and the stuff ive tried to fix it: when i press the power button the computer turns on i can hear the fan start and the pc seems to be turning on but the screen has no power so i cant see what the heck is going on! also one other thing when booting up i noticed is the cd drive constantly makes a noise a small click then a whir which to me sounds like the laser stopping and starting, fortunately its a removably cd drive so i removed it and no noise so it was definately the cd drive, now ive searched around the net and no problems ive found match mine, this laptop takes a charge, and can run from the battery or plugged in to the wall with the battery out, also the power light (nor any other light) doesnt blink, nor does the pc restart itself, i have no beep codes and as far as i can see it is trying to boot so maybe is something to do with the screen, vga etc? the only thing that confuses me is the cd drive will do that weird stop start noise which is detering me from going with the screen as it may be something on the motherboard gone south and is causing the cd drive to act strange? any help please is thanked in advance!!! steve

if you have the just the operating system you can re-install that without touching any of your other files. Be sue NOT to use your restore software as it WILL destroy your data.
Just fixed mine again! you need to solder 2 wires to the computer connection then chop of end of cable so that you can solder together. Make sure you get them round the right way!
Do you have a usb to SATA connector? If so you can plug the old drive into the USB slot and it will act as a slave so you can pull the contents from the old drive to the new. The adapter is about 25.00 or If it was me I would invest into a pocket USB hard drive case that you can put your old drive into perminatly so you can always have a external hard drive for back up later after yo uhave moved the data over and reformatted it. The case is $25-$40.00.
Try to check your settings in the control panel sound hardware .Maybe its disconnected or there are wires that has been cut-off. Try to check also your volume settings in the task bar. Maybe its set to low or minimum volume.
