Update the BIOS and check if doesnt work, try running a recovery on the sys.
If problem still persist than contact manufacturer as the sys has to be repaired

Go to your control panel and click the "find and fix problems2 link under SYSTEM and SECURITY then select the trouble shoot audio playback. Click next wait for it to search then select speakers and click next this should fix your issue.
Alternatively the volume setting for one or more sound devices might be disabled or set too low. There are separate sound controls for the hardware devices (speakers / head sets) and the individual applications (Windows sound / QuickPlay / Windows Media Player). For example, if the speaker is turned on, but the application is muted, you will not hear any sound. open the sound volume mixer and check the different settings

Why wont my hp pavillion dv7-1240us turn on with or without being plugged in ? but while plugged in if i hit the power button all the upper lights breifly come on then off..
because the battery isnt charging. Most likely cause is your dc jack is broken. Take out the battery, plug in AC adapter. Gently wiggle the adapter and hit the power repeatly. If it briefly turns on and off then yes your DC jack needs to be re-soldered.

How would I now if the battery is bad

Welcome, and thank you for using FixYa!

To answer your question: The laptop itself will tell you that the battery is bad.

In any version of Windows, when you look down near your clock, you should see the Charging Icon engage and display; once the power adapter is plugged in. While this icon is displayed, you should see the percentage number rise, as the battery charges. If the battery remains at a low percentage, and never rises, then the battery is bad. That will be proof of your need to replace it.

My hp pavillion dv7 1130us laptop will not turn on at all was working fine then stopes charging and then when batery went dead that was it I have no power at all now with or without the batery in
press and hold the Power button for 60 secs without the battery and power cable and then reconnect to it back and try to restart and if nb turns on then log on to www.hp.com and download the latest bios and install it as Administrator.

My hp Pavillion dv6000 looks like it wants to turn on but turns itself back off after a min or two. It does this process over and over without turning on.
Unplug AC & battery. Then, unplug the cell battery right at the memory compartment (wait for at least 10 min).
Plug everything back in. Laptop should be back to normal.

It works for me.

Contact HP. There are known issues with the DV line of laptops. They die......seriously. Ask them if the problem qualifies your laptop for a "one time warranty enhancement". They might just fix it free as there are known problems with the DV series.

Hp pavillion dv7 won't power on
Same issue - solved by disconencting everything (main battery, CMOS battery, RAM, hard disk and wireless card). Held in power button for 20 seconds (HP say this removes any electostatic charge on the main board). Reconnected everything and machine booted to Windows. Ran HP's onboard diagnostics and everything checked out OK.
