Why chain will not stay on?

If the chain starts to get loose then you need to tighten it up or it will throw itself off the bar, also if you do not keep the chain tight and sharp the chain will be damaged when it is thrown off the bar.

I have a poulan/craftsman 306A runs ok but smokes like crazy and unburnt fuel dripping from the exhaust, compression is good but wont rev as high as it should and wants to die when actually cutting

sounds like a bad carb. replace it or if you have a pressure tester test the fuel inlet with a low pressure and see if it holds. if it doesn't it's junk

I can't keep the chain tight on the chainsaw

After adjusting make sure to tighten the bar bolts(nuts). If they're missing, replace them and tighten securely after adjusting the chain tension.

Chain keeps coming off

Open the chain guard.Once there look for a bolt that hold the chain plate. The chain plate has a large groove and the bolt.djust the chain by plull to the front until the chain is tight, but not too much, just test by hand if is move freely but tight.Reverse the procedure.

I was given a poulan 306A chain saw. I guess that is a 2 cycle motor? What goes in the "oil fill" hole? Bar oil or what? This is a 59cc motor if that has any thing to do with it.

Bar oil goes into it's own tank, and premixed fuel (50:1 using a modern synthetic saw oil) into it's own tank. The fuel can should be thoroughly shaken just before adding more fuel to the tank to prevent oil starvation. Gift saws generally have things wrong with them, so if you can't get the engine to run, suggest that you either find a friend that is knowledgeable about saws or take it to a service shop for repairs. Hope this helps!

Chain damage

The chain could be stretching. Are you using a good quality bar and chain lube? Never use old motor oil. Once the chain has jumped several times it may be bent.
Properly adjust the chain and keep an eye on it while using. start with a new bar and chain and watch the tension. You can also replace the tool less cover with a standard cover for about $25
