Question about Heating & Cooling
Have a 20 year plus vulcan gas heater and I cannot turn off pilot. I am pressing down sharply on the dial but it will not turn off. What is the likely problem and how else can I turn this off.
Hi, If you are talking about the knob on a gas valve that you use to light the pilot and turn it off also, you have to turn the knob either ccw or cw to turn it off. To light the pilot is when you turn the knob to pilot and push down and hold it, light the pilot while you continue to push it down for a minute, and then slowly release it and pilot will stay lite. So, if this is the type you have just turn knob one way or the other and it will shut off. If you do not have this type set up, just turn off the gas to the furnace at the flex line as there should be a hand valve by code and by law that supplys gas to you're furnace. You can shut it off there and the pilot will also shut off.
Sincerely,

PS If you don't have either one of these shut off's, on the main gas valve it self, you should have a place marked pilot adjustment. Pop the small chrome cap and insert a very small screw driver to turn it cw to shut off pilot. This would be you're last choice.
