Re: Have a 20yr + old vulcan gas heater and I cannot turn...
Hi, If you are talking about the knob on a gas valve that you use to light the pilot and turn it off also, you have to turn the knob either ccw or cw to turn it off. To light the pilot is when you turn the knob to pilot and push down and hold it, light the pilot while you continue to push it down for a minute, and then slowly release it and pilot will stay lite. So, if this is the type you have just turn knob one way or the other and it will shut off. If you do not have this type set up, just turn off the gas to the furnace at the flex line as there should be a hand valve by code and by law that supplys gas to you're furnace. You can shut it off there and the pilot will also shut off. Sincerely, Shastalaker7 PS If you don't have either one of these shut off's, on the main gas valve it self, you should have a place marked pilot adjustment. Pop the small chrome cap and insert a very small screw driver to turn it cw to shut off pilot. This would be you're last choice.

1- turn the toggle switch to the ON position.
2- Turn the gas valve dial to the PILOT position.
3- Depress the pilot button while pressing the ignitor until you see a flame. Continue to depress the pilot dial for about 30-60 seconds.
4- let go of the button, and the pilot flame should stay lit. If it does , then turn the gas valve dial to the ON position.
5- Set the temperature and your done.
First turn the dial on the hot water heater to the off position and wait for 5 minutes. Then turn the dial on the water heater to the pilot position. Press in the dial and use a gas grill lighter, long wooden match, or similar device to light the pilot. Once the pilot is lit, continue to hold in the dial for about 1 minute then release and turn the dial to the temperature setting that's comfortable for you.
Open up the union in the gas line and bleed all the air out. Once done the pilot should light in a short amount of time. If it still will not light, remove the pilot and inspect it for spider nests in the head or regulating cap.
What do you mean by the pilot light is on but won't light. Do you mean that there is gasbut won't light. If so the spark may not be hitting the pilot properly or it may not be getting enough gas. If lighting but continuing to spark the sensor may need cleaning. This can be cleaned with steel wool (not sand paper), probably will need to disassemble the pilot asembly The pilot may also be dirty reducing gas flow. If this is the case dis-assembly will be needed and the pilot cleaned.
It sounds like there is air in the line, so open the gas line just a little for a few short seconds to let some gas out, after that, keep the one red dial on pilot then turn the other to about medium. Light the pilot by depressing the red button, then once the pilot is lite, continue to hold the red button for about 1 minute, Once that is done slowly release the button and then turn the dial that is set to pilot to on position and give it about 1 hour to heat up
Remember if you smell gas, turn unit manual gas valve off and open a near by window, wait until smell is gone then proceed with these directions, turn manual gas valve back on, turn thermostat down.1.) turn combination gas valve knob to the pilot position and press down knob, if unit has a striker button, push striker while holding down knob until pilot lights, keep knob held down in the pilot position for 20 seconds then let up on knob and turn to the on position, turn thermostat up, main burners should light.
