For severe cartridge error messages on the Photosmart C4100 series printer models (i.e. Replace Cartridge, Cartridge in wrong slot, Not Intended for this Printer, etc.) which prevent printing, conduct a 'tap 41' diagnostic test. The 'forced service test print' may be used to evaluate the cartridge's electrical health; often the ink cartridge is internally damaged when these types of errors occur; it is suggested you ensure cartridge's rear electrical contacts and printer flex driver cable contacts are clean before assuming the cartridge has failed. For more detailed information on HP 92 thru 99 ink cartridge error messages please visit:
Photosmart C4100 Printer Series Tap 41 Cartridge Health Diagnostics Procedure (Reference video - HP 74/75 cartridges are electrically identical to HP92-99 cartridges): http://inkjet411.retailinkjet.com/?page_id=1741):
1. Press and HOLD the 'LEFT ARROW' button.
2. Press the 'Setup' button (wrench icon). Release both buttons.
.......or alternatively, press the following five (5) buttons simultaneously: 'Photosmart Express' + 'Photo Fix' + 'Reprints' + 'Photos' + 'Help'
3. At "Enter Special Key Combo" menu, select 'OK'. 'Support' menu should be displayed.
4. Click the Right Arrow until 'Reports Menu' is displayed.
5. Select Ok. Click Right Arrow until the 'print-mech button tap' menu is displayed.
6. Select Ok. ('code = 0' will be displayed); click and hold Right Arrow until 'code = 41' is displayed.
7. Select Ok. The test page prints. Refer to video on how to read the test print.
NOTE:A good HP 93/95/97 color cartridge should display 600 good nozzles, while a good HP 92/94/96/98 black ink cartridge should show 672 good nozzles. Refer to video link above.

I have to ask this question of you, just to make sure this is not an issue. Are you using a factory new ink or toner cartridge?
Please consider the following:
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridges that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks or toner causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead or photo conductors.
If you are using factory new ink or toner cartridges, then please call the manufacturer’s Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the cartridges

I have an HP Photsmart C4100 printer. I purchased remanufactured ink cartridges (both black and tri-colored) from Vivasmart. The black one works fine, but when I installed the tri-color, I got an error message that says "Print cartridge problem" The following print cartridge has a problem:
Tri-color. And I can't print. The screen on my printer says "Remove and check color cartridge." I have done this several times and it still won't print. I have turned off the power, removed the cartridges, and unplugged the unit, but it still didn't help. Any suggestions?
