Model 253.8193616 will not start by itself but if I tap it real good beside the temp control knob and call it by it's right name, the compressor starts right up again. I do this twice a day but I want to leave the house for a couple of days....is there a part I can replace? Although the unit is 16 years old, it looks new and is worth saving. Please help.
The thermostat needs to be replaced part # 216230400 it is $59.51 at www.sears.com (parts) or it is $52.45 at www.apdepot.com this will fix ya.... both will ship direct to you. If you have to leave you can unplug unit and jumper out the thermostat 2 wires plug back in. This will make the unit run 24/7 until you get the part but it is better than losing the food
Sounds like the temp control has begun to acquire oxidation on the contacts inside of it. When you tap near it, there is just enough impulse vibration for the spring-loaded contact points to help the electricity to find a path through the oxidation. If you feel strong one day, take it apart and polish the metal contacts to remove the oxidation. Then re-assemble it and re-connect the wires. Should be good as new again. Second option...replace the control dial unit. Most contact points in electronics are designed to have a "wiping" effect when they are actuated thus removing any oxidation from the mating surfaces.
