I would suspect that the CD-Rom drive has gone bad. The easiest way to check this is to swap it out with a working CD-Rom drive. If the bios recognizes that one you have the culprit. If that is not the problem, I would then check the cables. If they are all ok, I would make sure the BIOS is updated. If none of these solved your problem, It may be a bad IDE or SATA port, or failing power supply.

This should be a quick fix. How old is the machine you are trying to update? Do you know if the jumpers on the drive are in order? Is it a SATA or ATA drive? Did a CD or Disk come with your drive? Check jumpers on your old drive and make sure the jumpers on the new drive are similar ( master, slave, cs ). Usually leaving on Master is best. Is anything else on this line, like a CD or DVD? I think you'll get it from here.

Have you tried burning a CD in the new drive? Because the drive is a DVD it will always be recognised as a DVD, but should work perfectly well with CDs both playing and recording.

Changing Sony Vaio BIOS

you should be able to exit and save changes, which my guess is you are exiting without saving the changes. theres is a way around this, by pressing either F8, F9, F10, or F12 to access the boot menu, and then you can boot from cd to install your linux operating system
