1996 nissan maxima screaches when started after replacing belts.

Replaced the fan belts on a 96 maxima. It still screaches when started for a few minutes. It's damp today and the shriekiing appears to be toward the alternator or idler pulley. The pulley turned easily and looked in decent shape. It's also noisy for a bit when the heat is on.

If you never replaced the idler pulley, I recommend that you do so. Right now I am assuming the belts were fine before replacing them. With 145,000 miles I 'd replace the idler pulley/tensioner pulley. The reason is, with the belt off, and you spin the pulley it will seem like it is ok, however when you place the belt back on, you now placed pressure on the pulley, causing it to screech if the pulley is worn out. Another senario is the belt is not actually tight, it may look as though it is tight, but no tight enough to keep from slipping. Again, I am assuming everthing was ok before the belt replacement.

1996 nissan maxima... i have properly reinstalled my alternantor and noticed that my belt pulley tensioner is screeching. what is the proper order of washers on the pulley bolt?

Its likely the tenisinor was the cause of the alternator problem in the first place its a big ware part leeding cause of belt failure water pump alternator power steering and ac compressers . You would be wise to replace it 96 likely has never been done .And its far cheaper then all of the above parts 20 to 30 dollars

Sounds like your ignition switch is worn. Do you have a big bunch of keys hanging from it? Only fix would be a replacement.

Whats the symptyms for the timeing belt to give out on a standard 96 nissan maxima

Runs terrible or won't start at all if it's broken. Shoot a timing light at your crank and if the mark jumps around, you timing belt is toast. It should saty almost in the same place all the time, unless you rev the engine.

Will not start

It could be a timing belt issue, or your starter is no good... taking too much power.

When to change timing belt on 1996 nissan maxima

Maximas had a timig belt until 1994. Some Maximas from 1992-1994 had chains also, but only the VE30DE models. All VG30 models had timing belt. Since 1995 all maximas (A32, A33, A34 the all new A35) have timing chains and the rarely/never fail. In fact in my 12+ years with nissan, I have't seen/replaced single timing chain in a Maxima, so pretty bullet proof setup and I have had few of those cars and have one right now. Awesome cars, by the way, just keep up with the oil changes and it will run forever. One of my Maximas had 245000 miles, when I was selling it and I still see it on the road here and there. BULLET PROOF engines.
