I can't install a Netgear wgr614vp router - stops in the middle and says, "we have detected a static IP address" - won't let me go any farther

When I run the installation CD, it goes through several steps involving wire hookups, and then a window pops up saying, "we have detected a static IP address" - then, the next page show slots for an IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS server. - It says I -should get these from my ISP - but when I called Comcast, the rep said they can't help me because the router isn't theirs, and I should contact Netgear. The Netgear installation materials included a sheet entitled, "No CD Drive Installation" - which gives a web site to enter into a browser window - "http://routerlogin.net" this is supposed to bring up a page with a username and password , and then a "setup wizard" - but when I enter it, I am immediately re-directed to another web site - "http://kb.netgear.com/app/home - which is a support web site. The support guy said to use the automatic or dynamic IP address link - but I can't get it to come up.

This is the page that comes up when I went into Netgear's support web site and asked why "http://routerlogin.net" won't come up on my browser:

    <<<

    Affected products: WGT624v1, WGT624v2, WGR614v5, WGR614v6, WPN824v1

    Symptoms

?The router administration pages are not available using the URLs www.routerlogin.com or www.routerlogin.net.
When accessing the Internet, various computer applications do a "DNS lookup", which is a way of converting between URLs that are easy-to-read such ashttp://www.netgear.com with their numerical equivalent. (For www.netgear.com, it'shttp://12.7.210.242/). Some programs make such a large number of request for these DNS lookups that the router's firewall software treats it as a potential attack. In this situation, the computer making these requests is blocked by the router from the Internet.

At the moment, there is no workaround.>>>>

I tried 5 or 6 times to run the Netgear installation CD - it stopped at "We have detected a static IP address" every time - When I tried to use the "192.168.1.1" method, I was redirected to the Netgear support page - I could have solved the problem if I could have gotten into the 'dynamic IP address' link, but I was redirected from the page every time. Netgear said my cable modem didn't recognize my computer's MAC address, and the redirecting problem came from a firewall problem, and they "can't fix it at this time".

Comcast wouldn't help me because it wasn't their router. I gave up, took the router back to Best Buy, and the "Geek Squad" guy recommended a Linksys router - I installed that - it worked for an hour, I shut off the computer, and it refused to work upon rebooting the computer. I spoke to a Linksys Support rep to reinstall it, and it's worked fine ever since.

Has your ISP set you up with a STATIC IP? This is most unusual; does this error pop up even before you do the setup on the router?

The fact remains, unless Comcast (your ISP) has given you a "static" IP odds are that your IP is in fact NOT static, but dynamic (where your ISP can change your IP at the drop of a hat. I am wondering what the router is detecting to tell it that your IP is in fact static? Comcast OUGHT TO be able to tell you, without getting one of "their" routers, if your IP is static or dynamic. Comcast has this answer, and no onev else, so keep after them.
At any rate, you ought to be able to get to your router control by pointing your browser at http://192.168.1.1 and log in with the following:
User Name: admin
Password: {leave this blank}
Once you've logged in let me know and we'll take small steps to get you online, OK?

During set up router is asking for static IP address. Why is this question asked?

It should ask you to enter at least one Static IP address. You have to enter the IP address given by your ISP. Without IP address, you'll not be able set up the router. You can assign the DHCP later for the machines which will be connected with the router..

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

My friends has a netgear wgr 614 v9, and it wont connect,, juts keeps saying acquiring network address, i tried to reset it ( lil hole at the rear ) but no joy,, how can i solve this,, would someone...

your computer is not getting IP address from the router. You said that you reset the router. Press the Reset button on the router and hold it down for 30 seconds. release it. Unplug the power to the router and plug it back in. restart your computer and check if that connects. If that doesn't work then assign a static IP address in the range of your router. you will need to find out the default IP address of the router. you will find the default IP address of the router in the router manual or if you go to the web site of the manufacturer, you will get the IP address of that router. Now once you assign a static IP address to the computer it will show you connected , now try to set up your router.

Netgear DGN 2000 won't connect to internet by cable / wifi works

Might I suggest looking at the routers configuration. This can be done by typing in 192.168.1.1 into your web browser. Typically the default log in is: User Admin, Password is password. You want DHCP set on. Save all your settings. Then reset to factory default. There should be a reset button on the router. This will reset it to when it was new- any changes you made will be gone.

Wndr 3300 net gear router wont work with hn 9000 hughes net modem

I went to the Hughes web site to check out the modem. They say it is also a router. I think you will have to disable the router abilities of your WNDR 3300 Net Gear Router.

Get into the Netgear setup by loging on to it.In its WAN setup select Static IP Address and set the Static IP Address to the same as the hughes modem, except for the last number which should be about 50 greater. IE: Hughes 192.168.12.1 and Netgear 192.168.12.55.

In the DHCP setup, disable the DHCP Server

In the Wireless setup, Give your network a name is SSID. You should also set up security to keep others off you internet connection with a WEP key.

I hope this helps.

Wireless access point connecting to router...

The question is how do you want to cable the netgear and what do you want to do with it.

If you cable a lan port of the DLink to the Netgear WAN port you will have two subnets that must be addressed differently. Opening up and forwarding the ports for XBox could be difficult.

I believe cabling the Netgear as an access point makes more sense. CONFIGURE THE NETGEAR BEFORE CABLING. This is achieved by wiring a lan port on the DLINK to a lan port on the netgear and ignoring the wan port on the netgear. This will involve configuring several router items that should be completed before the devices are cabled together. You will need to remember the Netgear's new network address and probably use a static IP address from a computer to configure it back into being a router after these changes, if required. Or reset the configuration to factory default following the users guide.

First the Netgear needs DHCP turned off as it will be part of the DLink's network and not a separate subnet - the DLink will perform the DHCP services.

Second the LAN side of the Netgear will need a static IP address in the DLink's network. This is where it may get tricky for you. Verify the DLink has an IP Address like 192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask like 255.255.255.0. That means all IP Addresses in your network start 192.168.0.??? where ??? is unique for your network. Verify your DLink router has a set of addresses reserved in the DHCP setup for dynamic address assignment these addresses like 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199. If the above is true or with the information you extract from you DLink router you need to determine where you can create static IP addresses -- in the above case 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.99 are available. You need to assign one of those like 192.168.0.2 to the LAN side of the NetGear Router. You will probably want to assign another to the XBox == like 192.168.0.20. You will probably need to deal with opening ports or placing the XBox into the DMZ of the DLINK router which will require a static IP Address.

Now cable the devices

When considering the XBox Configuration below the DLink is the router that must be configured to allow the open ports or DMZ access to the Xbox == the netgear is not functioning as a router in this configuration.

Check out the following links on XBox Configuration if required.

The second link may be the best to start with.

The generic connection and configuration document

This is a good description of possible router2.gif options.

Static IP

Normally a router will assign an ip address in relation to it's own address and not a static address, eg if router address is 192.168.2.1 it will assign your pc as 192.168.2.2. So if you mean you want to change the router to your pc's addresses that you have set yourself, you need to manually alter the routers ip address and dns address to the same as ypur pc's eg if yours are 10.0.0.1 then the router can be 10.0.0.2 or anything as long as first 3 digits are same. If it's not answered then apologies as it's unusual to detect static addresses, normally they are unable and can't see your pc'c.
