Panasonic Fax Phone Can't send or Receive fax

The KX-FM131BX, KX-FM131CX and KX-FM131AL do not connect directly to a computer. They only have RJ-11 connections (to the phone line (line in) for all models and to another phone or answering machine (in some cases).

To send and receive faxes with a computer, you need some sort of USB or network port on the machine. Brother has some that may fit your needs: http://www.brother-usa.com/Fax/ModelDetail/2/FAX2840/Overview is one of their lower end models.

Do you have a DSL or any other digital phone line?

Are you set to "AUTO RECEIVE" ?

Call the fax machine from a regular phone and listen for fax tones.

check to see if your phone line is plugged in the " L" or line slot on your fax machine if it is then press the speaker or monitor key and listen for dial tone. then you put a document into the feeder and dial your cell phone number and press send, when your cell phone rings answer and listen if you are getting a high pitched squeel. if you are then it should be working. try it the other way too by dialing from your cell and listen again for the squeel. if you still don't get the squeel you have a defective modem.

90 percent of the time that is a phone line issue.
But, first thing to look at is see if someone has removed the phone line and placed the line into the extension of phone jack and not the one marked "line"
You may simply need to replace the phone line between the machine and jack.
Yes you may hear a dial tone, etc etc, but you are losing one of 3 things. Either some of the phone line voltage, phone line current or what is called decibel loss.
When you send, you make the phone connection like lifting the phone off the receiver, but the signal to receive must be strong enough for it to key the fax board modem to receive.
If you have another device plugged in on the same phone line. Try removig that item, ex, an answering maching, Credit card machine etc and see if it is interfering with receiving also.
There is a high percentage the phone line is the issue.
Some things to check on the machine itself. Make sure Junk Fax setting is OFF, Make sure ECM ( error correction mode) is ON. Make sure Secure Receive is OFF and manual receive is OFF. Those will be in your machine setups.
The Junk fax setting will stop almost all incomming faxes.
It is less likely a software corruption issue. But that is remotely possible.
Let me know please, Some other obsecure things that can cause this. But I think you will find one of the posted things will resolve your issue.

Call your cell phone from the fax machine and check the caller ID to make sure that it is the correct number for your fax machine. Next, call the fax machine from you cell phone, and make sure the fax machine rings. Problems like these are almost always a phone line issue, not the machine.

Noisy phone line can cause this or it could be drum cartridge or even fuser, check phone line for noise by listening to it, if noisy report it or put on required filter if using ADSL.

Also test machine when doing a copy, and when printing a report, is there a problem too?

without more info you fault is one of these.. line, drum cartridge , fuser or dirty scan glass (where originals are fed.)
