When I change batteries I loose date/time etc.

When I change batteries I loose the date/time and other settings, even if the batteries were not dead and I do it within a few seconds. Is there another battery built into the camera? (the instructions say I should have several hours to make the change, without losing the stttings)
Peter.

    Thanks Adam.
The problem is that it does not give me the 6 hours, or even two minutes!
I guess the capacitor in not holding any charge any more.
It would probably cost more to get it fixed than it is worth, but it has been a very good camera and still works well, apart from having to go through the set up procedure every time I change batteries.

There isn't another battery built into it. From what I undersatnd once you have placed batteries into the camera or connected the AC adaptor into the camera for 2 hours the camera will retain the date/time settings for 6 hours.

If they haven't been in the camera for two hours and you remove them the camera will loose the settings. If they have been in the camera for over two hours the camera will keep the settings for 6 hours. This leads me to think that a capacitor on the board inside the camera charges up for two hours and then slowly discharges over 6. Hope this helps.

One possibility is a dead BIOS (CMOS) battery. If you open the case to expose the motherboard, searching you should find a flat silver battery, about the size of a quarter. On the surface will be a number, likely CR2032 (maybe CR2025). The current from this battery refreshes and maintains the volatile data in BIOS, such as date / time etc. If the battery died, the BIOS will return to factory default settings. In the event the system has been altered in some way (replaced hard drive, custom RAM with different voltage requirements...), default BIOS settings may block boot-up. How to test? Power up, enter BIOS, check time. If time/date are off, the battery has likely died. How to fix? The batteries are available many places (Radio Shack, Amazon.com, maybe Walmart.. ) for less than $1. Replacing the battery, powering up, entering & refreshing BIOS {AKA "setup"}, saving settings & exiting BIOS MAY trigger the system to boot, as BIOS is capable of self detecting settings for certain components.
{Note: replacing a dead battery first is recommended but is not technically required while testing. If plugged in, BIOS should retain settings between boots).
Depending on the BIOS and any hardware changes made "post-factory", booting MAY require determining and manually entering BIOS settings for non-factory components(e.g.: RAM voltage, timing, etc.). Custom BIOS settings and other complicated solutions are beyond the scope of this introductory "Quick Fix" solution.

If I remove the battery on my mother board will I lose my settings??

The CMOS battery really doesn't hold too much. It mostly saves things like date and time, but since the advent of the internet, most of the CMOS settings are re-calibrated every time you connect to the internet(most of us are connected at all times now). Change it at will. You probably won't notice any change at all.

My pc automatically get start on plug on .and then it suggest me to press F1 to Continue. when I do this it takes incorrect date and time how to restrict it.I want to start it with start button on cabinet

There can be many reasons...
  • Your BIOS setting is not correct.
  • CMOS battery is down(Most probably).
  • both
You can open the BIOS setting page by pressing keys like DEL, F10, etc. depending on your system's manufacturer at computer startup(post screen). There are lots of wakeup options check them properly.
One of the option is "Restore last state of power Button on failure" which can turn on your computer without touching the power button. you should check these options.

And it suggest you to press F1 because your system's date/time is not configured properly. You can also set Time/date in BIOS also.
If your BIOS Battery(CMOS) is not weak or dead then after setting these values your computer should start properly.
And if your BIOS battery is dead then all the settings will be lost(date/time etc) after a restart and you will face same problem again...

Try changing the Power-button option and Date/Time in BIOS and see if problem persist....if yes then you have to change COMS battery that is on your Motherboard.

Error 00161 00163

[CHANGE YOUR CMOS BATTER WHICH IS INSIDE YOUR CPU CASE]
I do not think you fixed the CMOS battery - (backup battery = CMOS battery)
According to the error codes, you have a dead backup battery and the time is not set. Makes sense?
161
(Dead battery.) 1. Go to Checking the Backup Battery
2. Backup battery.
3. System board.
163
(Time and date were not set.) 1. Set time and date.
2. System board.

Go to www.ibm.com Find and download the user manual, and the "hardware maintenance manual."
Do you know how to get into bios/setup?

Start with the machine OFF. HOLD DOWN and CONTINUE TO HOLD THE "F1" key.
WHILE STILL HOLDING "F1", turn the power on, and CONTINUE TO HOLD "F1"
This will get you into the bios "setup." You should check the date, bootup order, etc, and reset.
I would check the "wire" you think you reconnected---you may just not have actually reconnected it.
The "hardware maintenance manual" shows you how to maintain this machine, and it explains the meaning of the error codes.

This will get you started on looking for the manual:

I have a Fuji Finepix S7000 digital camera. I works fine, but, when the batteries get discharged, the camera looses all the "setup" info (date, time, etc...)... Is there an internal battery or something...

There is no internal battery. When the batteries become discharged or removed, the camera retains the date/time settings for about 24 hours. Most people have backup batteries fully charged so when one set is low in the camera, they can make the change quickly.

Fuji FinePix S9000 battery change clears date/time.

Hi

I started having a similar problem with my Fuji FinePix F10 after about 3 1/2 years of problem-free use. Another poster had some really helpful advice which I thought I'd pass on. It seems there is an internal battery or capacitor which basically fails after a while, meaning date/time settings etc are lost when the battery is removed. (Some people claim this is a motherboard/chip problem instead - seems to be contentious!) So the camera is faulty, but the problem can be worked around.

The advice I found, which worked for my camera, was this:

- Turn off camera and leave off for approx 15 seconds before opening battery door.
- Change battery quickly (within a few seconds).
- Close battery door and leave camera off for approx 15 secs before turning back on.

This retained all settings when I tested it multiple times. I imagine it might not work if changing over a totally dead battery though.

Hope it helps!

Some cameras, as well as having the main battery, also have a 'button-cell' type of battery that holds the system information such as date and time etc. I know not whether yours is one of these, but it should tell you in the manual

Thinkpad 380ed

1) This is a typical problem when the CMOS battery is very weak or dead, it will continually display the date and time and reboot with the same errors until you change the CMOS battery. On this model it is behind the door that houses the memory chip, above the battery, if you have the laptop turned over and battery closest to you. <--best bet, its a dead CMOS battery.

2) You can get to the BIOS to run tests, one of 2 ways, either hit the ESC key and other keys to get a 301 error or hold the F1 key and boot, you should get into BIOS. (You probably won't be able to do this until you replace the CMOS battery.) From there you can run diagnostic tests on various components.

3) Lastly, you can update the BIOS. From inside the EASY-SETUP bios you should be able to copy the BIOS part number, date, etc. Look for the BIOS update based upon model # either thru a search on the web or directly on the IBM website (a search on google of "bios update thinkpad 380ed" will bring up a link for the IBM page.) If you choose to do a BIOS update, read the directions carefully and remember not to power off the machine while the update is happening. If you've never updated a BIOS before, get someone who has to walk you thru it before attempting it by yourself.

GOOD LUCK :)
