When I plug it in, it says initializing, then system reset, then the cam pics come on and the timer shows the correct time clicks off a second or two and then the whole thing freezes. remote and panel buttons have no effect.

Update to above problem. I have changed the memory battery which, of course, reset the memory. Reboot and same thing. Freezes up. Front panel and remote have no effect. Can't reset using mode + 2 or mode + 4 because panel buttons are DEAD. Please help

My unit constantly freezes up.  It will seem to work fine and then I'll check to see if it's working properly and the power lite and record lites are on but the HDD lite is off and then only thing I can do is to unplug the unit, the remote won't work nor will the front panel controls.  When I plug it back in, it starts up and goes right into recording as if it is working fine.  It does this very often now.  I tried reseting the system and initializing the hard drive.

Anyone know what the problem is??????

You have to hook it up to a tv monitor and change the settings through the menu. It will originally include a password just to get you on, then you will immediately have to change it. After you do that you can access the menu where you can change the output settings

The manual says:

- If you forget the password, you shall reset SHR-2160/2162/2080/2082 DVR to
the values set at the factory. Keep pressing both the "MODE" button and the

Connecting the recorder to the security system

If you are hooking your cameras into the SMO-151qn then you can use the pigtail cable to connect to the Shr-1040. Make sure the video out from the SMO-151qn goes into the video in of the Shr-1040. If there is a choice use CH1. On the Shr-1040 hold down the mode button and press CH2 for about 10 seconds. The Shr-1040 should reboot. Once it comes up press the record button. After recording for a feww minutes stop the recording. On the SMO-151qn press the button on the front Live/Vcr. You should see the screen from your Shr-1040. IF you hit play you should see what you recorded. Good Luck!
