Try using a chillpad, it's just a little pad that has a fan on that you put in your lap and sit your laptop on that. When you put a laptop on something like carpet or a couch or your lap you block a lot of the ventilation which can cause it to overheat. When computers overheat they shutdown to prevent harming the circuitry.
Its probable that its the screen itself or the wiring to it. To isolate the problem, get a VGA cable and plug it to a stand alone monitor, it you see anything then its the screen.

You could try getting a fan for the laptop. I would recommend calling hp and getting an extendedwarranty (you can still do this even if your laptop is out of warrenty). I think this might be a problem with the motherboard. Lots of people have been having problems with there tx1220us over heating and burning parts up. the next step is your computer will quit booting which is where the warranty will kick in. it will save you about 150 to 250 dollars. Good luck.
