Blank screen on Compaq Presario X1000

I have a (you guessed it!) Compaq Presario X1000 with Windows XP on it and an Intel processor. I'm not sure what all would be pertinent so I'm sharing all that I know about it. I was using MS word and surfing the 'net on it when the screen flashed and it froze. Since the keyboard wasn't responsive either, I did a hard reset and left the computer alone for a while. when I came back to it, the screen wouldn't display anything... at all. It was as if power had been cut to it. the rest of the computer went thru the normal booting procedure as far as I could tell from the sounds. I tried plugging in a monitor to the VGA port and that didn't seem to work either. Is this a hardware problem? could this be the work of a virus or worm? HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Actually, I only have one monitor that I could use to hook up to my laptop and it's at my dad's right now so it would probably take a while to try out the Fn+F4 solution.

I also neglected to mention that the other ports on the computer always seemed to act up ever since I bought it (used). It never played nice with my Flash drive, external mouse, or any external media device other than CDs. This led me to believe it may be something with the power supply to certain areas of the computer and maybe it's not the screen that's shot. I'm really hoping it's not a hardware problem since I know how specialized laptop components have to be for each individual model.

I have a Comaq preario x 1000 notebook as well. The video card is typically the problem when the monitor flickers and then freezes. Eventually it will go black and not work. I did find that if you press above the F6 key applying pressure while turning the computer on, it will activate the screen, and you may be able to run in for awhile. This is very important for those of you who need the information off your computer. It seems many people have this problem but I have yet to find an inexpensive answer on fixing it. I believe the video card is integrated in the mother board but maybe someone else can shed some light on this.

Nevermind everybody, I ended up taking the laptop to a technician and they said I was pretty much screwed. I managed to get the contents of my HDD off of it, but I need a new laptop now. Thanks anyway!

Since I don't know how to officially close this problem or mark it as solved, I'll say it here. CASE CLOSED

One thing to look is see if the laptop monitor is actually displaying an image but with no back lighting as the inverter may have failed. This powers up the backlights which make the picture visible.

So once you think windows has loaded, under a bright light see if you can actually see your desktop, albeit very dark. Inverters can be sourced in US at around $20-50 so not too bad.

With an external monitor connected, after it goes through it's booting procedure try pressing the Fn (Function key, lower left keyboard) and F4 (Should have a box printed on it).

This should hopefully switch between the LCD monitor and the external monitor.

Please advise if the external monitor displays a picture after this so I can check further on what the problem could be?

Since u said that ur screen flashed and also u said that when u connected an external VGA nothing would display so from these two i can tell you that it is a hardware problem and that too with the VGA card/display card.

Thankyou

Will an Intel® Pentium® M

I don't know your exact CPU specs but I've taken a single core Intel M processor 2.0 GHZ from a Dell 800 laptop and put it into my wife's X1000 and have had no problems running XP SP3. My own x1000 computer reports Intel Pentium M 1600MHZ as CPU type.

I have a compaq presario v3000 i remove the vista now xp is running on my laptop but drivers are not working after change the os.

The model "V3000" is a generic term for a bunch of different models. To make sure you get the right drivers for your specific model, start at HP's site here and pick yours from the list. Then pick the Windows XP operating system and you'll find the drivers they have for download.

BSoD, Garbled Screen, Boot Failure.

If you are getting garbage on the screen before windows tries to load the laptop probably has a bad motherboard.

It's possibly only the video output is going bad on it, try hooking it to an external monitor and see if you get the same weird stuff on that screen.

Good luck, let me know how it goes
