Stanley 10-788 (contractor grade retractable utility knife) how do you change the blade? There's a little yellow button, but I am pushing it but I don't know if the knife is supposed to open or how its supposed to open?
Push the top metal button all the way foward as if pushing the blade out to it's (farthest) 3rd setting. Then push foward and down one more time which locks the mechanism down. Push and hold the yellow side button as you insert the blade. When the blade locks in all you have to do is release the yellow button and return the top slide to it is fully retracted home. The blade is loaded
Make sure you push the slider all the way forward or it won't release the blade when taking it out. If the slider is all the way forward, and not just to it's farthest setting where it locks. This is about 1 millimeter past where it locks. Sometimes, when you try to push it all the way forward, it doesn't go far enough. So you simply, move it back and then forward again making sure to push down all the way on the metal slider button when going forward to get past where it last locks.

How do I change the blade on the quick change/instant change knife?
Warning: Blades are sharp and can cause serious injury. Be extremely careful when handling blades. Wear eye protection and dispose of used blades properly, such as wrapping in duct tape.
FULLY EXTEND THE BLADE.
Press down and forward again on the slide button until the button is in the full front of the top slot (0 through 3 in the below picture).
Note- the blade must be extended beyond the 3rd detent position. This will cause the slide button to remain in a down position, allowing the blade release button to operate.
PRESS AND HOLD THE BLADE RELEASE BUTTON ON THE FRONT SIDE OF THE KNIFE. (Step 4 in the below picture)
Note- if the blade is not fully extended beyond position 3) , the blade release button will not work.
Remove the old blade carefully.
Insert new blade.
NOW, RELEASE THE BLADE RELEASE BUTTON. ENSURE THE BLADE IS LOCKED IN PLACE. If the blade does not retract, try carefully giving a slight tug on the blade to reseat.
there is a little black button on the end where the blade comes out. With the blade in the out position, push in the button and pull out the blade. With button pushed insert new blade or turn the old one around to use the other end.let go of the button and you are ready to go.
The blade changing is accomplished by pushing the yellow button and pulling the old blade out. It is reversible. If there is no blade at the ready, there may be more in the body of the knife, which are located behind a swing out panel on the handle. You'll need to push in the yellow button when installing the blade, and once the blade is in, release the button, and moge the blade until it clicks in place.
The model in your picture is a fixed blade utility knife (model 10-816). Your question asks for instructions for model 10-778, which is a retractable knife. I'll guide you through the 10-778 which you asked for, if you need instructions for the pictured 10-816 please re-post the question.
Push the thumb slide forward as far as it goes exposing the blade. Press the blade change button on the side of the knife (the small button on the left side near the blade) and pull out the old blade.
Insert the new blade and slide thumb slide back to fully engage blade in the internal lock.
On the pivot end of the bladed knife is a black plug that says pull. They actually mean "Push". push it away from the knife body and rotate the handle half it's mounted in, down. The body will rotate in half , revealing the utility blade and more blades in the rear storage. Also note the blade depth adjustment has a locking detent. You have to push it to the right to unlock the utility blade.and push it to the right when retracting to fully retract and lock the utility blade.
If it is a 10-816 then Knife swivels open for easy blade change and clean out - no tools required, much like 10-999 If it is a 10-778, you don't really open it. You press little button on left side, behind the blade wiper, and this releases blade. Push red button on rear of knife, to open blade storage if it is a 10-999 then press the button on rear and rotate the two halves.
