The Yamaha can only drive powered subwoofers. Make sure that the RTD250 has it's own amplifier built in, you won't be able to easily run it off the yamaha if it doesn't.( the powered subwoofer will have a mains cord to power if it's correct) If it doesn't have a amp built in, easiest weay is to buy a cheap powered sub.
Is the RTD 250 the sub fromthe RCA home theatre pack?

There are two types of subwoofers. Ones that have a built in amp and ones that don't. Ones that have a built in amp (like the one pictured) are called powered sub woofers. You will need a powered subwoofer to connect it to your Yamaha Reciever. (the Yamahas don't come with an amplifier for the sub on board, so no matter what cable you buy the sub will not work. When you get a powered sub, all you need is a standard RCA(phono to phono lead) I like to use the 5m ones for subs so you can place them around the room where you want.

I would throw out the Sub woofer you have unless you buy a separate sub amplifier for it. If you want to go to the trouble you can cut a hole in your sub box and "build" an amp in (Like I Have), but I suspect you will get a better quality result from buying ready made.

Cant get my subwoofer to turn on that is connected to my yamaha receiver

MAke sure you have the lfe output enabled. Or you could try to use a headphone to rca adapter from a cd player/phone to test it directly.

I have the Yamaha HTR-5940 and it has worked fine for years. Today turned on and there is no sound for the TV. Sound works fine for DVD, and radio. I have tried everything except toss it out the window....

did you connect the cables correctly most probably to get sounds out of a tv it should connected to the 3.5mm headphone jack.
you would need a Rca to 3.5mm cable for this

What could be causing the power to cut out on our HTR 5940 receiver

somewhere along the way something is shorting out.

First I would check the impedance of your speakers most common are 8ohm speakers and these can be driven by most amplifiers.

Some brands of speakers are 4 ohm and even less are 2 ohm. These lower resistance speakers put a great deal of strain on most amplifiers and may cause them to go into "protect" mode and temporarily shut down.(less resistance requires more ampsrage to drive them)

Next thing to check is to make sure that none of your speaker wires have any loose strands that may be shorting out either at the speaker terminals on the amplifier itself but also behind each speaker.

Another test would be to connect 1 speaker at a time and turn the volume up to see if perhaps the short is being caused by 1 particular speaker or 1 particular channel for example it may be your front left amplifier that is failing causing the entire system to shut down.

If you can't diagnose the problem on your own you may have to have a service tech look at it. I always caution people to first establish a "value" on any item that may need repair and then decide the maximum amount of money you would invest in repairing the unit Taking into consideration that 1 hour of labor and a relatively inexpensive part can easily add up to $100 to $150.

In the past when I have had similar issues it usually came back to being something basic that we overlooked in the installation, Ie: a bad cable loose connection etc.

HTR-5740 Subwoofer Hooking Up Issue

You can use a hi-level to low-level adapter. Just remember, the Yamaha does not send power (wattage) to the sub, just signal. You need to use a subwoofer that has an amplifier either externally or built in.

Connecting a Yamaha VX7 Subwoofer on my Yamaha HTR 5730 AV Receiver

Hello srqwrk,

You can connect the VX7 to the 5730 using an RCA Y cable like the one shown in the picture below. You get your one connection for the receiver and 2 for the VX7. These are available at any electronics store. Remember that the cable should be long enough to go from the receiver to where subwoofer will be placed.
Hope this helps. Let me know.
