The reader in the camera has gone bad. You can get it repaired by anyone who fixes camera's or by sending it to Canon which will cost you more then finding someone in your home town that repairs cameras. Just FYI the repair is somewhat costly roughy 150 dollars or so
Ok, got my Canon S2 IS camera as a Christmas gift in 2006. Been using it just fine til about November/December of 2009 when it seemed to not be capturing light ... then went to total black screen on viewfinder & on captured picture. Everything else worked just fine. Came to this site & found that the image sensor may be a known problem. I called Canon on 12/28/2009 reported problem. Sent camera to their IL repair center via UPS on 12/29, which cost me $15.00. They received it & sent me an email on 1/5/2010 confirming they got it & would fix free of charge if found no other damage like water or sand or the like. Received another email on 1/6/2010 repair was complete, found problem with faulty optical unit assembly which they replaced at no charge. Received camera back on 1/8. I have yet to test it out... hope the freezing temps did not hurt it on the way here!! I am very pleased with their courteous, quick service, and I never had to "haggle" with them about any of it. I was happy to pay the initial $15.00 to send it to them because they had not yet determined the problem. I would definitely buy another camera from them. :)

Briefly explain the situation and request for a courtesy repair. Good news is that Canon is repairing the Problem at ZERO Charge.
I'm certain that in the next few months Canon would issue an Advisory for a product recall as in the case of S1 IS.
S2 IS is a beautiful camera and Canon's customer service is fabulous. Hence please don't spread negative stories about Canon.

Varun

I have the same problem. Cannon customer support says it will fix this for $119 + 8 for shipping... or you can get a refurbished SD 800is for $140+10 for shipping with w/ a 6 month warranty... what a deal ;~)
It sounds like a CCD failure. I had the same problem and Canon fixed my camera's optical unit for free. The S2 Is model has a service advisory that recognizes this problem, but the S2 IS hasn't been added to the list yet. Canon should immediately add the S2 IS to its service advisory because this problem is causing a lot of confusion and bad customer relations.
From a similar solved problem:
I have read of this problem (doing research before buying a Canon S2). Apparently it is a bad sensor and Canon will fix it for free if it's still under warranty (otherwise it will cost $119.00).
and
I have the same problem. Just got off the phone with Canon and have to send the camera to them. Repair takes ~2wks. Call them @1-800-828-4040 and follow the menus.
Canon's site also addresses this for the S1 and others (but not the S2). Says heat and high humity can cause a connection to the sensor to come undone.
Hope this helps.
I have the same problem with my S2 IS. The problem occured more frequently over time. Somewhere I read that this is due to a stuck shutter. I'll keep you posted once my camera is repaired.
