you add vicks petroleum paste/jelly at the top where the air vent is. Add 1-2 tablespoons of salt with tap water in the tank, plug in the unit and warm steam will produce.
Mine never turns green, always stay orange when on. As for the vapour, i add a little salt to the water and it works wonders, just about a tsp... good luck!

They usually are 300 watts... actually not that big of a heater... that is why they use a small chamber to heat the water in and as the stem goes out a bit of water comes in to replace it...
Have you tried adding salt to the water in the vaporizer? Sometimes the water needs to minerals for the humidifier to work...I add sea salt to mine every time I fill it.
