I have a Sony STR-970 receiver and want to fix the hum coming out of the speakers. I'm pretty sure it is a grounding issue, but not sure where to start.

Does this happen on Turntable or on the other components ? Turntable should have a seperate grounding wire that should be connected to receivers grounding screw on back side.
If the problem not the turntable but other component i.e;DVD,CD or cassette ,please check your stereo cables that one of them-even one channel, L or R - could be broken/damaged and should be replaced..MAke sure to replace one by one to localize the broken cable..good luck...

do u have the unit earth grounded? sounds like AC hum, most amps have a ground lug, make sure that is grouned and the power plug to o the amp has a good ground.

Ive got a str-dg520 reciever and have a loud hum coming from all speakers have tryed removing all wires then putting back in but still happens

Try replacing the big Electrolytic Capacitors in the power supply section. When they go the let the 50/60HZ hum into the audio from the mains supply.

Subwoofer hum from STR-DH800

That points pretty much to a bad shield on the cable. Have you tried another one? Another thing to try is to rotate the AC power cord on the sub (if it has one). Sorry, too lazy to look it up.

Many things can be happening to cause this noise: loose connections; ground loops; speaker cables smashed, etc. Disconnect all sources and speakers, clean plugs and connectors, make firm connections, be sure of the energy quality at your home. Most sound noises come from fluctuations on voltage and energy. Consider to invest on a power conditioner. Good Luck.

Sounds like you are pretty close with this one. If you select fm tuner do you get audio. If not you may have the speakers on the wrong a-b setting. Make sure the audio from your cable box is not muted or turned down.
