Elna Stella TX - stretch stitches missing on stretch material
The stretch stitches work okay on non stretch material but when I try them on stretch material they skip stitches. The handbook doesn't mention using a ballpoint needle. Would this help?

Knit fabric stretches and flexes more than woven fabrics. You probably want to add a stabilizer under the fabric when you hoop it. If you use washable stabilizer, it will disintegrate when it gets wet.
Looks like stitch #06 might be a stretch stitch. You could probably also use a slight 08 or 09 zig-zag. Unless you are sewing something really stretchy (lycra) IMHO, a slight zig-zag is fine and actually is a lot faster than a stretch stitch which takes a few stitches forward and then one or two stitches in reverse. The stitch #09 is something that I use frequently for stretch fabrics.
You could try www.diplodocs.com or www.scribed.com, I think I've seen it on one of those sites. Is the 57 the TX model? If so, its got the most stitches of the Stella models, there was the ZZ, TSP, SP and TX, nice machine. If you can't find a free one you should be able to buy one from one of the sites like www.sewingpartsonline.com or www.whitesewingcenter.com
You can access the top of the gears in the TX by opening the accessories lid, removing all the acessories from the tray, then unscrewing five screws that you will see holding this piece down and flap in place. One screw at the front holds the front thread eye down so don't remove this completely, but you do need to loosen it off a bit.
