Opening programs is so slow virtual memory running low

which operating system you are using and what is the ram capacity? and onemore thing to check what is your virtual memory capacity. for that

Right click "mycomputer" > properties > advanced >click settings on performance > in advanced tab > increase virtual memory file size.
generally its size is ram capacity * 2 (ex: for 512mb its virtual memory size is 1GB) check that and we can increase the file size also.

My system says, (RAM) radon access memory low cpu intel (r) pentium 4 cpu, version 2.80 ghz. RAM 256 mb. What can I do to resolve this problem. Dell 4700 dimension

Windows XP requires a "bare-minimum" of 128MB of RAM, works "OK" with your 256MB of RAM, if you don't open too many programs at the same time, and if you close/re-open Internet Explorer about once an hour of usage.

But, Windows XP would be _much_ "happier" if you added 256MB or 512MB of RAM, because it is telling you ("available random access memory is low") that it is using all the RAM.

Add more RAM -- your computer will run much better.

Cpu is running at 100% and memory is at 80%. how can i fix this problem. computer is very slow.

There are many reasons for this issue.

1. CPU over heating: Make sure CPU fan is working very well and the ventilation of your system is not closed by dusts and all. its better remove all the dust from CPU.

2. Virus : Its happening sometimes because of some viruses. You need to install a good anti-virus and scan your system completely

3.Unwanted programs running behind.: Check your systems add/remove programs for the list of programs installed in your system. Remove the programs you are not using so far.

4. Excessive storage of temp files and caches : You need to remove all this unwanted stuffs from your system, see the step by step instructions on how to remove all this here

5. Virtual memory: Increase some virtual memory of your system. see the instructions here

6. Do a diskclean up and free some disk space of C Drive. see the instructions here

7. Stop unwanted programs at start up : see the instructions here

Do this things and see the result. still its showing the same issue you need to take your system to nearest shop

CPU running slow - I think the pentium went into a slow mode when the CPU fan failed. Dell BIOS does not have an option to restore to normal speed as Phoenix BIOS does.

Do you ever get a warning of low virtual memory? If so, go to microsoft.com. Then type in yyour operating system. It will then give you the appropriate propram to clean it up.

download the specific drivers to your desktop (so you can find them) install in this order, chipset , sata if needed, video, audio.
make sure you check the windows updates site afterwards for all the new windows updates since your version of XP was purchased.

Dell Dimension 8250 PC running Windows XP SP2 has CPU always at 100%

I guess it could be a virus, avast is not the best antivirus in my opinion, try to get a norton antivirus or NOD32 update it and run the scan, it ocuurs when a replicating virus copies files to all your HDD and is always busy...making system busy...and one more thing there could easily be a copy of the virus in your pen drive as well...
