When it have this kind of error is a problem of the power-board.
Anyway you must open it and look at the all capacitors and if are them inflated, if them are inflated must change them.
But can be a problem with inverters... control the transistors - MOSFET on the powerboard.
You need a new backlight inverter board. If you dissasemble the monitor you will see a circuit board with 4 2-wire connectors connected to it. This is the board you need to replace. Typically they run from $15 to $40. Usually just easier to replace the monitor. Another idea is to reduce brightness levels on the monitor in the menu while looking at it with your flashlight. Then power off then power on the monitor and it might stay on longer.
when the screen goes black shine a flashlight on it. If you see a dim image the back light needs to be replaced. Otherwise check the inverter as that may be causing the problem as well.
This happened to me and I was able to fix it. I cracked it opened and found a bad capacitor, bought a replacement at Radio Shack and I'm back in business. Actually using it right now to post this.

"Most" newer monitors will let you know if the are no longer receiving a signal. Sounds like the backlight is burnt out. Try getting a bright (LED works best) flashlight and shining it at the screen at all angles to see if you can see any of what you were doing. If the backlight is on the fritz, either return it on warranty or buy a new one.
