sounds like starter is fried or ignition switch went out. the switch is where you put your key in. did it smell like hot plastic or more electrical from the engine.
If you have positive battery cable that is shorted, fix it. A dead short to ground should smoke it or get very hot. Check ground, also.
Use a test lite, ignition bat fuse 1 and 2, underhood fuse block, Should be hot all the time. Voltage and ground, both, are important.

this could just be oil leaking out off value cover and burning off exhaust can u smell the smoke? does it smell like antifreeze ?? if smells like antifreeze more than likely have a coolant leak if has little smell or burning oil smell probably an oil leak
try to find smell is coming from . dont see smoke or hear anything humming / clicking or feel any wires getting hot . but i would unhook battery when not workin on .its not blowing any fuses or relays . feel you postive cable to see if it getting hot.
sounds like oil leaking on the exhaust, this can be engine oil or power steering fluid, have the car put up in the air and checked, this can cause a fire if not repaired.
White smoke means water/antifreeze entering the combustion chamber(s) or intake passages. Suspect a gasket leak somewhere (tighten all intake manifold nuts and bolts). Check all radiator and heater hoses for leakage and hose condition.
