CDC-X217 head unit's mute light is flashing on the display making me believe that the mute feature is activated. I mean why else would the word mute be blinking on the display? I know the mute button & power button are one & the same however I cannot figure out how to disable the muting.

check wiring to make sure all wires r properly connected, sounds like a power problem . if it is an expensive radio and it is broken then its probably worth fixing.if its a cheepie than chunk it and get a new one

i have never seen a car stereo with its own battery - could be something as simple as a bad ground - don't rely on the radio chasis and a screw that attaches it to the dash. make sure the black wire in the radio harness has a good ground

check for a logo that shows a speaker with a cross(X) across. just switch this back. this is also available on the remote. You could normally find this on the top side so as to mute easily when in a traffic junction. Check if this button is jammed. Also check if the display shows a mute , if not the sound reduction could be a different issue related to the audio output. check if any speaker connections are short, or speakers connections touching the body. Chek on the wiring once again with a multimeter , for any shorting, correct positve voltage and good ground. hope this helps. Good day
