First step is to unplug any speakers you have loaded and turn your computer off. Plug the speakers back in and turn your computer back on. Don't use restart. See if Windows hardware installs speakers again.
If you have not made changes to your computer, like an update from Microsoft you want to change, you can also just do a system restore.
Choose a date before the problem started. See how below.
If not, there are a few ways to check sound.
Go to Control Panel (right click on icon and open), then System folder, and then to Hardware Tab, click Device manager button to troubleshoot. System restore is also on this menu in the back.

If you recently updated Microsoft Vista Pack, you will NOT be better off using system restore. They have a
beta download that will fix problems that occurred due to Vista Service pack.
