I bought my Canon Powershot A540 in july 2006 - recently it runs through batteries like crazy sapping energy out of the batteries in record speed. What's up?

I´ve got the same issue. If you use the batteries that were in A540 in another camera, does it still work?

It is very simple to resolve it. You need to clean the batteries contacts of the camera, I´ve used WD40 Spray Lubricant. After cleaning the contacts, try to open the battery door without touching the metal part with your fingers.

Canon told me today that both the A530 and A540 have the same battery lid problem that gives false messages"change battery".

I am awaiting an email from them to allow me free repair at their factory with a 5-7 day turnarond.

Go out and buy rechargeable batteries. Duracell and Energizer both carry them. They last a long time. It's about $10 for a charger and 2 batteries but well worth the cost with the money you're saving on the batteries

I bought the best rechargable batteries and it still has low batt

Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info:

CANON POWERSHOT A530 LOW BATTERY READING

Alicia,
Mentioned on my blog that the last paragraph of the advisory states:

""PowerShot A530 and A540 digital cameras affected by this phenomenon will be repaired free of charge, regardless of warranty status. Accordingly, if the opening/closing spring on the inside of the battery cover of your PowerShot A530 or A540 digital camera sticks out, please do not use the camera. Instead, please contact a Canon call center (1-800-OK-CANON) at your earliest convenience."

But also mentioned that if they don't help, a temporary fix is to insulate the spring from the battery contact plate. Merely place a small piece of tape between the portion of spring that's sticking out and the metal battery contact plate.

Shows low battery after putting in new batteries

Your best solution is to use Sanyo Eneloop batteries because of their higher voltage over the discharge curve compared to regular NiMH batteries. See http://www.epinions.com/content_309637189252.
I have gotten a full week of use with hundred of pictures on one charge using a Canon A540 and a set of Eneloops. The only problem is they are hard to find, but you can get them on Amazon.com.
