When I turn microwave on it blows 60 amp fuse

  • fs8228 May 11, 2010

60 amp fuse on what, an inverter? 60 amps on 12 volts is only 720 watts. most microwave ovens need more power than that. running 60 amps through wire sounds scary to me. it must be very thick wire! (normal household outlets are 15 amp maximum)

60 amps times12 volts = 720 watts times 80% effic of conv. = 576 watts available for microwave...

You must have a very tiny microwave as most require at least 1000 watts input power. That might have something to do with blowing the fuse. Since the microwave has a very reactive inout, you need a goodly safety margin above the rated watts input.

Kitchen aid microwave blow 20 amp fuse on start.

Hello James
Having a 20 amps fuse is a bit high in todays standard as 15 amps fuses are recommended these days - they do not want too much current to go through the house wires.
Better to buy a new microwave as this microwave could burn down your house.

Do my microwave havea fuse because it wont turn

Yes, there is usually a 2 amp fuse located on the inside near the where the electrical cord feeds into the power supply. There might also be another fuse as well, be sure to check all around the power supply to be sure that there is only one fuse.

Plugging your microwave into an extension cord that is not rated for its use, or plugging the microwave into an un-grounded electrical socket could cause that fuse to blow.

I hope that this information was helpful to you in any way.

Fridigaire microwave does not turn on

Your aren't giving me much to work with but I have fixed a bizillion microwaves and in most cases they blow the fuse (probably 18 amps) and it is because the HV diode shorted. So both would need to be replaced. Not a big expense. I would think about $50 from a reputable company. There are some exceptions of course. If the unit is very old it could have a bad magnetron in which case it is not worth repairing. The unit may only need a fuse. Everytime you hit go the microwave makes a very hard demand on power and over time the fuses can blow. Let's hope for the best a new fuse. Let me know how this works out.

Microwave blows fuse when turn on

If it is blowing an internal fuse it could be a lot of things.

-short in the motor
-short in one of the other components
- gunk/dust could be causing a short

If it is your house circuit breaker/fuse then either the microwave draws too much current/amps for the circuit and you should try another circuit or you already have too many things/appliances plugged into the same circuit (not necessarily the same outlet) and need to unplug one or more of them so that the 'fuse' doesn't blow.

Viking Microwave Model VMOC205SS little over 4

9 amps is approx. correct. Does magnatron make an odd sound when running? If not, you will need to discharge cap then clean terminals with alcahol. Replace diode as well. Should run correctly. If blows again, replace magnatron. Suggest you put a 12 amp fast blow fuse in circuit and nor a 20 fuse.If you dont have a grill or an oven, use a 10 amp fuse.

I cant turn the microwave oven on without the fuse cutting out

If you got the interior of the unit wet you may just wait a couple of days for it to dry out and it will be ok again. You may also plug your microwave in to another outlet, one that still works when the fuse that blows is unscrewed.

Finally you have a 1000 watt microwave which translates to using 10 amps of power. If you have a 15 amp circuit, looking at the number on the fuse, and you have other things plugged into that circuit like a toaster, toaster oven, coffee pot, hair blow dryer, etc, you may simply have to unplug something else to provide your microwave with the power it needs. good luck.

Fuse keeps blowing.

It appears like the high voltage capacitor is shorted or the diode connected to the capacitor. You might want to check the monitoring switch as well if the capacitor and diode are good.
